    Vintage Zenith Mechanical watch

    Dear all,

I need your experience about vintage watches. How much could this Zenith watch be worth? It is a caliber 106.6 made between 1955 and 1957?
The person who sells it wants 300Euro. Its a little more than 350 USD. Is it too expensive?
    Thank you for this info.

Give the person the address of a good psychiatrist.

The case has since long exceeded its regular live, and has nothing to do with Zenith. Here the case maker:
bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: HB - Hermann Becker, Pforzheim

We don't do evaluations here, but here it is easy: Bare movements of this kind go for 10...30 bucks, and a rotten case is available for free.

The watch seems to have a six figure serial number which is too low for the fifties. This indicates that it was assembled in Besancon, the french dependency of Zenith. As for the value, we don't do evaluations here since these are highly specific to the watch in question - two watches that look very similar may differ largely, even if they are of the same type and from the same brand. Some help though: it has a nice dial and looks in good condition, at the same time, it is not gold so the value drops a little again. You can also take away some more from your evaluation if it hasn't been serviced in a while. So, with these parameters, you can get a reasonable estimate by searching for Zenith watches of that age in that condition on eBay or similar and selecting sales by private sellers (a shop, even an internet shop, will always demand and deserve some more than an entirely private seller since it will have to give some sort of warranty) and working out an average of what they go for. Good luck!

Quick addition - Dr. Ranfft is right, the case is not original. This considerably reduces its value. At the same time, it is not worthless - the movement is definitely original and the dial looks OK from here. Just compare it to other similar stuff on the net and see what it goes for.

Thank you both for your comments. So, what he asks for the watch is definitively exagerated. Zenith does not necessary mean expensive and this depends on a lot of factors. I will continue my search...

Well, all other things being equal, Zenith is definitely more expensive that your average private label Joe Blogs company's watches with generic movements! At the same time, although prices seem to be rising currently (the brand is becoming more appreciated after the last CEO change and a return to the roots in their designs), getting one shouldn't bust the bank. I won't comment further on the price (asked or deserved) for that particular one but if you scan through several that are on offer on fleabay and similar, you can arrive at a reasonably good estimate for these things quite quickly.
