    Whatís your best mistake?

I was writing my entry for WRUW and it got me thinking about the watch Iím wearing, I didnít actually go out to buy this watch, it came as an aside to the one I really wanted but in a twist of fate I no longer own the one I thought was the prize but I still have the one thrown in as a deal clincher.

So come on guys and gals, letís see those good mistakes, the watches you didnít go out of your way to buy but somehow acquired, but have become one of your favourites.

Almost my entire collection is a happy accident. I rarely set out to buy any particular watch. I happen upon them in my general watch hunting. I set out to buy a few modern ones with just those watches as a goal.

I am one who collects by hope and fate. Hope I find watches and fate in what I find.

    Re: Whatís your best mistake?

It was my first foray into vintage watches. I was on the hunt for a Bulova but got distracted by the interesting looks of a Benrus. Only after placing the order did I notice it was a miniscule 26mm... classic newbie blunder! The closeups made it look so big.

Rather than cancel the order (which I didn't realize was possible... newbie mistake #2), I sucked it up and received the watch. Luckily, it had a misaligned hand so I was able to open a legitimate return. But, not wanting to be a bad customer, I didn't request a straight refund (newbie mistake #3) and instead negotiated a trade for one of the seller's other items. He had a good looking Gruen for sale at a much higher price, but he let me trade for it at no extra cost (meaning I totally overpaid for the Benrus... newbie mistake #4).

The Gruen arrived, and 2 1/2 years later, it's still in my collection. One of my faves, but the result of no less than 4 newbie mistakes.
