what is this vintage pocket watch

    Hi there,

I gave recently acquired an old pocket watch and no one in the family know anything about it. I was just wondering if you might be able to tell me how old it is and what it might be made out of?

    Hi and welcome.
Looks to me that the case is stamped OMEGA?

If so maybe you have a nice OMEGA pocket watch

Agree, its an Omega. It looks to be the 7 jewel (lowest grade) version bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Omega 19'''

Its probably from the late 1890's or early 1900's; the stamped case means it was likely cased by Omega in Switzerland. Switzerland had a hallmarking system for precious metals by that point, so the absence of any hallmarks means that it's probably some version of what's sometimes called "Silveroid" or "German Silver", or any of a number of other names that use varations of the world "silver" to describe how it looks. I doubt the case has any actual silver whatsoever; while "coin" silver (silver with other metals mixed in) wasn't normally hallmarked, it was still usually indicated as such.

I think Rob is more or less correct. The case would seem to date from right before 1900 based on Omega's dating table:

If you ever have the watch serviced, the movement serial numbers are generally found underneath the dial. Have the watchmaker write it down, or better yet take a picture.

Any watch produced in the first decade of the Omega company is historically significant and should be preserved.
