where to buy crystal for Elgin 16s?

    Hello,

I have been searching a bit for a crystal for my 1906 Elgin 16s hunter pocket watch but can't seem to find a good source online. Does anyone have any recommendations? The hunter case has the following text:

    WARRANTED
    B&B
    ROYAL
    20 YEARS
    6242891

BTW, I finally go it running. I had to buy a working movement on EBAY from which I transplanted the pallet fork and balance wheel. I do not have the confidence yet to fit a new balance arbor so I went the easy route and swapped the whole darn thing!

I will try to post pics later.

    Thanks,
    Mike

The Elgin Collectors site has a list of parts sources. A 16s crystal should be easy to source from Otto Frei ,if not there, than Dashto. A link to the Elgin site is available in the reference section at the top of the forum.

I'd recommend keeping the originals with the watch; although the replacement might look identical to you, you'll probably find there's at least a partial serial number engraved on the parts you removed that should match the serial of the watch. And often different watches were finished to different standards that might not be noticable if you don't know what you're looking for.

Very funny. I'm sure the original poster thought that was a very constructive comment.

I'm fairly sure Watchbreath was being serious; in threads where people have asked for crystals for their pocket-watches, a lot of the answers I've seen have been along the lines of "consult a watchmaker".
"Pipes are occasionally of extraordinary interest...nothing has more individuality save, perhaps, watches and bootlaces."

    - Sherlock Holmes.

Very welcome, y'lordship. Perhaps when the watch is all together again, we can see some photographs?
