Question Why does it exist? Universal Geneve Microtor pocket watch

So I was digging in my closet of last buys and found this UG Microtor pocket watch.
I don't remember why I bought it and very slightly where it came from.
What makes me wonder why there is a Microtor pocket watch in a first place...

At the time that was produced, the popularity of PWs had already waned, so maybe it was a marketing gimmick. But it's a fun piece, and yours is in very nice condition.

lennyt11421...what a Neat Piece! I've never seen one. I do own a few Universal WW's, tho, and they're well-made & nice to work on...a bit like IWC, movement finish-wise.

Self-winding PW's certainly are scarce, but do have a history extending back more than 100 years.

Of course, for anyone inclined to carry a PW, a self-winder makes Perfect Sense, yes?

And: the last time I looked, Patek continues to offer a PW, so, the concept continues...! Michael.

The first automatic PW was the Eterna Golfer and this Universal seems inspired to

There were various self-winding pocket watches quite some time back, in the 1800s at least, that used varianions of pendulum winding. The later watches from the 1950s/60s onward are automatic wristwatch movements cased-up as pocket or more often pendant watches. The UG microrotor model is a particularly nice example.

Re: Why does it exist? Universal Geneve Microtor pocket watch

Why did Bulova make a Accutron tuning fork pocket watch or Citizen and Seiko made a pocket watch using an electronic movement (not quartz)? Because they could. A pocket watch might have been old hat and not very popular(which is odd given all those Western TV shows of the 1950's to 1970's) but it was a chance to test new technology in new environments. Given the limitations of the micro rotor (smaller weight meant more shaking) I would not be surprised if the pocket watch with micro rotor bombed and was discontinued only a little while later. The Eterna one might have lasted longer, the nice thing about Eterna movements were that they started winding if you looked hard at them.

A very nice watch you have there.
