    Zenith cal. 133.8

Hello, everyone. Doing some research here and in other websites, I became more and more interested in Zenith watches. My respect and admiration for the brand's excellence grew very much since I begun my journey through horology - even more considering how understated is Zenith's attitude towards marketing. Currently, I own two Zenith specimens, of which I'm very proud.

Now, I'd like to add one more Zenith to my collection: a specimen equipped with renowned caliber 133.8, from 1953/54. My main concern is its dial, particularly the fonts in the "Zenith - Automatic" inscription. Would you say this particular style was typical of Zenith dials of that period? Hope you can help me once more.

    Hi Elvis,

Like all manufacturers of the era, Zenith outsourced their dial work, and so there was not always great consistency. Also, if the watch that you show was sold in the Brazilian market originally, that would help to explain the possible differences,

On the other hand, it is almost certainly a redial (see below).

    Cheers,

    Tony C.

The quality of the printing is, IMO, far too low. That said, I believe it's a redial.

Actually, my problem with the dial is the lume placement, as I think it should have been nestles in the arrowheads, and makes no sense obscuring the second track.

Not only that. The font used for "automatic" appears to be the result of some restorer's outburst of creativity. Here's what appears to be a good specimen of an original 133.8 dial:

Thought as much. Actually, that "Automatic" inscription was, to me, the biggest red flag. The brand's name seems quite ok, though. Maybe it was not a full redial, but...

Thanks again, fellows. Such a pity. I'll pass it.
