Zenith Pilot Vintage - worth 1700 EUR?

    Dear all,

here is the old Zenith of my grandfather. The glass is not original since it was broken and changed about 15 years ago.
for a complete restoration including change of many parts Zenith is asking as much as 1700 EUR.

do you know which watch is this and if this is a reasonable price?

of course it has a great spiritual value for me but I am not sure since this is a lot of money.

    thank you for any help

It's usually more cost effective to have service and repairs done by an independent watchmaker, but frankly it's very difficult to comment on the price of service and repairs without knowing what is needed. Can you share the details of what Zenith is going to do for 1700 Euro? Perhaps you can post a photo of the quote. Maybe they are proposing to do some unnecessary things.

Also, the quote from Zenith should have information about the watch, including the movement caliber and the model name, if any. So you should already have that information.

Don't send it to Zenith. It's a nice watch (I have a couple, too…) and they are relatively underpriced in the market. But find a good and sensible watchmaker to service it, it's a fairly simple movement. As would most people here, I would suggest leaving the dial as it is and the case, as well. No doubt Zenith would have re-done the dial and polished the case for their 1700€. By your alias, I assume you are in Italy and I'm confident you can find a good person there. But 1700€ is out of all proportion for this watch, even as important as it is to you.

PS: the glass on these would have only ever been generic and not signed by the manufacturer, so the issue of "original" is not material.
PPS: probably something like a cal 12-4-P-50

As stated on the Zenith forum, it's a Zenith "Pilot", probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. I suspect that it has a Cal. 120 (if it hacks, i.e. the seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown to the setting position, it is definitely a Cal. 120).

Are you from Italy? in Italy there are many good Watchmakers who can repair that watch by paying around 200 Euros.

    this is a 200-300E watch.

    the 1700E quote is insane.
