    Zenith is Undervalued

Some debate if some brands are undervalued....and they are right but look at vintage Zenith. The 135, divers, and the El Primero aside....look at what you get for under $1K. You find 18k Zenith, chronometers, chronometer grade watches, etc....

For a brand that won so many awards and recognition, such low prices. I picked this up for under $600.

An average condition run of the mill manual wind Oyster cased Tudor will cost as much. Universals and UN vintage sell for similar too....which are 2 more undervalued vintage names but still.

I should not complain though. Getting higher quality vintage watches because they don't have the same huge modern branding and image engines is good for us vintage enthusiasts.

    The market determines value.

So many watch brands are overpriced. Resale value can be a wake up call.

When new they tend to collect dust.

A common statement made from the 'unknowing', "I thought they just made TV's and radios".

    A couple of thoughts.

First, the example that you show is a beautiful illustration of the role that fashion plays in the market, as that style of case is not widely appreciated. I sold a chronometre with the same movement in a more traditional case for around three times the amount that you paid for yours.

Secondly, while I am not disputing that Zenith can represent good value in the vintage market, your original qualification could be used to make a similar case for most manufacturers! I mean, if you exclude divers and chronographs, Eterna, Certina, Mido, Movado and others fall into the same category.

Having said that, I do think that your use of a chronometre example is meaningful, as in my view, such watches remain, as a group, undervalued across all brands. Sure, there are some exceptions like the Zenith 135 and Omega 30T2rg, but to use just one example, the Girard-Perregaux HF Chronometers often represent outstanding value, given their quality.

$600 sounds a fair price to me :/
Maybe it's the opposite, the others are overpriced?

    That's all.

Since some 4 generations people could afford wristwatches, and rocked down more than one within their life - a huge supply for the demand of few who are crazy enough to collect watches. Consider that normal people drop their old watches into the bin or a drawer, because the don't like them any longer. For them they have virtually no value.

A nearly infinite supply against a moderate demand creates a rather sensitive balance, and already the header of this thread can boost the prices. Remember the "Omegamania" auction, created to push Omega into the region of top brands. Prices exploded, and it lasted years to return to a normal position within the market for old iron.

So if you love watches, buy or sell whenever you like. If you want to make a buck with them, sell what is presently hyped, and buy what is "undervalued". Or vice versa: Hype a watch you want to sell by starting threads like this in all major fora.

    Regards, Roland Ranfft
