    Zodiac Sea Skate

Thift buy (not particularly cheap - but a good buy I think). I would appreciate any information as to how old and what mechanism I should expect to find. I'm being cautious about opening. I assume if 20Atm should be harder than average to remove back and no easy notch seems apparent for opening. Don't want to scratch. Running quite accurately right now. Signed Champion band that I assume is original. Crown is not signed. Should I assume crown is not original? Thanks for any opinions and information.

Nice watch and good score. Heck I wish I would find a Zodiac one day.

Anyway the Sea Skate is basically a Sea Wolf without the bezel. (consider it a dressy Sea Wolf) They are a bit harder to find then the Sea Wolf.

Yours is in great condition and has the original bracelet. Truly a good score

The crown might have been replaced as it should have the Zodiac symbol.

The crown does not need to come off to get to movement. The case back is removable. However it is one of those pressfit ones

The watch has a 17 jewel movement in it

Here is a few pics of one

Very nice specimen! Looks all original and complete except the crown.
Early genuine Zodiac bracelet JB Champion with sliding lock/unlock clasp. Relatively rare.
To open the case back you will need "watch knife" tool. But be careful. Don't lever the tool against the case to try to pry the case back. It will most likely will leave mark on the case or scratch the back. Only push into the notch and expand it by perimeter.
If you will ever decide to remove movement, pay attention to luminous compound on hands and dial. It is Radium. You don't want to inhale or swallow its tiny particles. So handling it requires additional precaution. Or pass it to trained professional.

Thank you for your comments and advice YV...I made an brief careful attempt to get back off myself. You are right. It is hard not to press against the case and I cannot do it without high risk of damage. I will let my watchmaker work with it. And I have already ordered a NOS signed crown. I feel pretty fortunate to have happened on this piece. I will post photos of the movement when I get them. My research indicates that at least a couple of different movements were used in these. This movement does not hack. Some have 17-21-25 jewels. I read somewhere that the earlier of the movements in these did not hack. No sure of the accuracy of this.

It is really hard to come by these days. Just for reference, you need crown for 702 916 or 722 916 case.

    >My research indicates that at least a couple of different movements were used in these.

Right, movement expected to be inside is Zodiac 70 or Zodiac 70-72 no date.

    >I read somewhere that the earlier of the movements in these did not hack. No sure of the accuracy of this.

Your source is absolutely correct. Early models did not hack.

    Re: Zodiac Sea Skate

HOPEFULLY....the crown I ordered will fit. I did not order by a number but by size and measuring. I know I am rolling the dice. I am pretty sure I paid a good bit less for this watch than the value of this piece so I can live with the risk of throwing $20 away. I should even be able to get a service done and still be good. But thanks for providing the crown number.... Sounds like I may need it.

Would you mind to post a picture of the crown if you have it? You can account on instant verdict here even before it arrives.

Sure. Here goes. This is coming from Netherlands. Seller says from parts from Watchmakers estate so hoping meant older or vintage. If this doesn't look promising let me know if you are aware of any good sources to try and find correct one. Thanks.
