Forum Rules
  1. Customer service issues are to be handled privately, not on the forum. Don't put OCEAN7 or AIRNAUTIC at a disadvantage over watch companies that keep everything secret. Everyone here knows that service to our customers is a top priority, and we have proven that beyond any doubt. Please note that warranties are not transferable and although everyone is welcome here, only OCEAN7 and AIRNAUTIC customers receive warranty service and support.
  2. Trolling and posts that mislead prospective new customers are not allowed.
  3. No sales of OCEAN7 or AIRNAUTIC watches here in posts, signatures, or links to sales forums, or discussions regarding resales or pricing of watches. Referrals for the purchase of accessories, even those that compete with OCEAN7 or AIRNAUTIC accessories, are permitted.
  4. Updates on projects in progress are posted as they become available. Please do not ask for updates, as these threads will be deleted.
  5. Please post all design ideas, suggestions, comments, and questions, to the forum, so they can be shared with everyone. Please don't email them to us privately. Please note that we do not pay for ideas and suggestions that we use, and we do not claim exclusive use or ownership of those ideas and suggestions.
  6. Be respectful and tolerant.
  7. Please contact OCEAN7 through our web site only, not through forum mail or messaging, as we do not regularly check for messages.
  8. All of our images are copyrighted and our logos are trademarked. They can be used here for discussion purposes only. They may not be used for any other purpose including the resale of watches.

Posts that do not conform to these simple rules will be deleted without notice or explanation. If your post has been deleted, please review these rules. Reposting deleted posts will result in suspension or banning from this forum.

Your participation by posting on our forum is confirmation that you agree to and accept these rules.

Models and Pricing

Please visit our new web site at OCEAN7 Watch Company. You will find pictures, pricing, and delivery information for all currently available and soon to be released models and accessories. It is not necessary to email us regarding stock status. If a watch is available to order on the site, it is in stock and ready to ship.

Products in the design phase are discussed here, and CAD drawings are usually posted within the design thread. First, take some time to read the threads that interest you, then feel free to ask questions and participate in discussions.

Mitch

Terminology

TERMINOLOGY
  • SS = Stainless Steel
  • 316L = A low carbon grade of stainless steel that is very corrosion resistant
  • GMT = Greenwich Mean Time - also used to describe a watch with a second time zone indicator or a 24 hour watch
  • Bead Blasted = A finish applied by literally blasting a watch case with a course medium to give it a frosted finish
  • Bezel = Rotating or fixed area surrounding the crystal, outside the case. Often bezels have engraved scales or markings.
  • Brushed = A finish applied to a watch case to give it a satin finish
  • Chronometer = Swiss made watch that is tested & meets certain standards set by the Swiss Official Chronometer Control mainly -4 to +6 seconds average per day
  • COSC = See Chronometer
  • Destro = A watch that has had it's case "flipped" so the crown faces the opposite direction. The term is used often with Panerai watches. Destro is Italian for "right."
  • DLC = short for Diamond Like Carbon. It provides a stronger, more scratch resistant coating on the watch than with traditional PVD methods.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond-like_carbon
  • Lume = Luminosity - Chemical compound that absorbs then gives off light energy. Used on watch dials, hands, bezels, and reflectors. The chart below shows the relative brightness of various materials with C3 SuperLuminova as the reference point. C3 grade A is now available. It is not brighter than original C3, but it glows longer. OCEAN7 uses luminous materials from RC Tritec exclusively, on its Swiss made watches.

  • Auto = Automatic Movement - A watch movement that is wound by the normal motion of your wrist
  • CF = Carbon Fiber
  • Chapter Ring = Sometimes used instead of Reflector, which is the term used by manufacturers worldwide
  • Chrono = Chronograph - A watch that includes a built in stopwatch function
  • HEV = Helium Escape Valve
  • HRV = Helium Release Valve (same as above)
  • MOQ = Minimum Order Quantity, often used when discussing manufacturing issues
  • Plongeur Hands = Refers to the style of hands originally used on the Omega PloProf watch
  • PVD = Physical Vapor Deposition - a black coating that provides a hard case finish
  • Reflector = The ring on the watch dial under the crystal, bearing figures and minute marks. This part is called a reflector whether it turns, or it is fixed.
  • LM = LaHugh & Mitch - The men who started the OCEAN7 Watch Company. "L" is now Lynn. It was originally feared that LaHugh was buried in the basement, but he has surfaced as a happy OCEAN7 owner and friend of the brand.
  • Ti = Titanium
  • Uni-directional = Refers to the bezel on a dive watch that only turns counter clockwise which is used by scuba divers to time their dives
  • WIS = Watch Idiot Savant
  • WR = Water Resistance

Using the GMT display as a rough solar compass

From Cannon:

This tip also applies to practically all the other watches equipped
with a 24 hour hand. The wearer can use a 24h dial for approximate
navigation anywhere between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Polar
Circle:

Important! Both the 12 and the 24 hour hand must be synchronized to
display local time
Method 1: laid horizontally, the dial will head North if the 24 hour
hand is pointed towards the sun
Method 2: if the 12 hour hand is pointed at the sun, the 24 hour hand
will point North

The margin of error directly depends on the difference between local
official time and actual local solar time. But one doesn't need to get
too much in the technical details for approximate urban navigation.
