Breitling Plans for in house movements

It has been published that ETA (owned by the Swatch Group) will stop selling ETA movements to outside manufacturers by 2010. Breitling makes heavy use of ETA ebauches.

What plans does Breitling have to self manufactur its own movements? Is R & D underway as we speak? I have seen nothing from the company on this issue. What effect will lack of parts have on exisiting Breitlings down the road? I assume Breitling has ample inventory of the items they modify, but what about the ones they purchase and use as is?

I apologize if this has been a topic before. I didn't do a search to look it up.

AFAIK Breitling has already made a deal with ETA ....

I think you are probably right bricktop but I have no specific info that will add anything to the discussion at the moment. The issue has been well ventilated on the main forum so I'll provide a link right here for those interested in what has been said so far. Many interesting points made and I think a very interesting read..

Only part of the information you quote is correct.

    a) The Swatch Group will continue to supply movements. The supply of raw movements will be gradually reduced though. In this case watch manufacturers will either have to order the complete movement from the Swatch Group, have the movement modified according to their requirements by the Swatch Group, or buy complete movements as they are and then modify them in-house.

    b) Although Breitling has not officially confirmed the fact, but Breitling is currently developing an in-house chronograph movement. When Breitling acquired a few years back Kelek S.A., which was later renamed Breitling Chronometrie, I had a feeling that this was their ulterior motive.

So, everything is under control - except prices maybe.
