ATOMIC Sync capabilities around the world..

    Hi All:

I was very suprized when I opened my new AWG-500BJ-4AJF today and it started to do the rounds!

It stopped smack bang on the correct time so very happy to say that thismodel receives in Cairns, Queensland, Australia

I decided to unwrap a different more recent model, namely the GW-410TCJ-7JR PIPELINE MASTERS 35TH ANNIVERSARY model, and it also connected

I will have to check all my other's now as I always ignored this feature as just took it for granted that they didn't work in Australia.

Does anybody else have this experience in their associated country?

I always thought they only received in USA and Japan.

    Just goes to show

    All the best - OZZIE

I thought it was always Europe on one frequency and USA/ Japan on the other......Perhaps the antenna has improved?

Does atomic syncing work in Hawaii? I've never gotten a definitive answer from any salesperson regarding this. I really hate to spend extra $$$ on a watch with an atomic feature and find out it doesn't work. It would be cool if it did work here though.

Does anybody know how far the range for the atomic clock in Fort Colins, CO is? :thanks

    Aloha Derek,

According to the manual on my GW-1500, reception under good conditions is supposed to be 2000 miles, or 3000 kilometers. Other than that, not sure if it would receive the signal out by you:-S .

Not sure if it's the frequency or the Antenna, both or neither:-S

    Maybe it's something else

    Hi Derek and Ozzie,

It's both quiet possible to get the signals (Derek from Fort Collins, ozz from Japan). These Atomic Clock transmitters don't come "far"on land, but seem to reach much further over sea. I believe there must be a NIST picture (I believe Ben in Alaska showed it once) about the Fort Collins range. At some point at night it just reaches Hawaii.

For Ozz it could be he receives the JP south signal. Since Cairns is very much in the North of Australia and Japan is maybe not that far as it seems (DX signals are also possible, these are radiowaves reflected against the ionosphere, causing radiowaves received in un-expected places).

The open ocean does not block signals like buildings and geographic barries do...

    Cheers,

    Sjors

P.S. Looking at the above map, I'm afraid Ozzie is receiving DX signals... Indonesia would block the direct signal completely.

Re: ATOMIC Sync capabilities around the world..

I'm northeast of the great lakes and basically east of the northern shore of Lake Superior and it shows on that map that I am on the edge of reception. But....I receive a signal every night without fail. 4 times a night. Any season. I've owned my MTG-950 for about 10 months now at it has never failed to update.

I have read that somebody in southeastern Ontario couldn't get a signal though!!

    cheers,
    Tim

    WOW!!

    Thanks for that Sjors

That's some excellent information that I wish I would have known previously, although I do recall you once made a mention of European wearers receiving from Rugby\_O

Timothy's MTG receives just as well, maybe we should try to wrap the watch with copper wire and relay some signal for Derek:-D

    All the best - OZZ

    Hi Ozz,

Well, Europes best known Atomic time transmiter is the one from Mainflingen, which is often called the signal from Frankfurt, since Mainflingen is a small city near Frankfurt. Actually I heard from the signal from Rugby since the dual receivers were released, so it's probably a less known transmitter (although that could of course be different in the UK)

I now have at least three models that receive both signals.

    Hi Derek,

If you might get an atomic model and receive the signal in the future, you might try to get the WWVB QSL card. Always nice to have these in your collection

    Cheers,

    Sjors
