    Battery Expiry Dates

Are the expiry dates on batteries when they should be sold by, or when they should actually be used by to get their full, expected life span? The ones I'm looking at are silver oxide. Also, how fast are they likely to deteriorate after their expiry date? Cheers.

    Re: Battery Expiry Dates

    According to this article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver-oxide_battery
the self-discharge rate is 'negligible.' I would assume that means it's at least as good as lithium batteries, which are usually rated for a 10-year shelf life.
Edit: I also read an article about mercury-free silver oxide batteries, but if you get the ones that contain mercury, it looks like they're only rated for about 5 years of use before they start to leak.

Cheers TTT. I ended up ordering 10 Maxells with an expiry date of 2011. I'll probably only get to use 4 of them, but they were cheaper than buying 4 from most other places. I'm not sure whether they have mercury in or not.

Are you using them for a vintage camera?
I haven't seen them used in anything else.

Be careful if they ever leak, as I'm sure you know that mercury is not exactly good for the ol' brain :-D

No, I'll be using them for my PRG-40.

    Ha ha,

Only 10, those will last maybe 2 months with me

I have only 2 2016's left and am about to order a new batch of 50 or 100...

    Cheers,

These are SR927's. The only thing they fit is my PRG-40 so there's no point buying more than 10, as they'll definately be expired before I've used them all. It's possible I could get through more than 10 CR2016's in the next few years, between me and the kids.
