Exclamation Beware of Chemicals like Off! or products with Deet that could stain your G-Shocks!!!!

    Public Service Announcement

I always throw this friendly reminder out there at the beginning of Summer, for some reason there is a chemical in Deet products that permanently stains the resin on G-Shocks. I would really hate to see someone put out good money on a G-shock only to be horrified to find out it stained when applying these products.

So if you anticipate needing to use Off spray or one of many bug repellent sprays for your summer picnics and barbecues......remove your G-Shock or you will be posting a question on how to clean the stain off your watch.

Have a safe and happy summer, and don't hesitate to Bump this thread to remind those who may not know

Thanks so much for the info sir! I will be spending the summer out of town and will definitely use OFF, a lot. May sound stupid but does this include black G-SHOCK's?

Yes sir, do a forum search with the word, "deet" It puts dark spots on the resin that many have unfortunately found cannot be removed.

I wasn't aware that Off could do this. Does it even stain black resin?
    Cheers!

Black isn't colourless nor absolute so it could be stained by bleaching or turned a darker tone.

Deet isn't legal over here in the Queen's land so we don't stain our gear or lose our vision etc with care less spraying etc, however we do get bitten to sh_t.

The 7900's are my favourites, although the 56s are currently my focus. But nothing is excluded, except pink Risemans.

Thanks for the reminder, Doug. I have heard about this in the past, but had forgotten.

Luciano, it causes a discoloration whereby you'll see slightly different shades of black on your band. I guess in effect if you badly stained your band, you could coat the whole thing in Deet or Off and try to even it out, but it'll always have some blotchy appearance to it.

    Yikes!
Though we're not in bug season here anymore, it's good to know. Thanks for the heads-up!
    Cheers!
