not sure, but is it the 3/5 seconds glow, after you press the illumination?

    or

the glow in the dark after you charge the illumination with light source

Afterglow is the short time the dial stays illuminated after you release the button.

I thought it was the length of time between my coming and her going. No, wait, that's "eternity"
I try not to anthropomorphise my watches; they hate it when I do that.

and, I think my 5600 sustains it longer then
any of my other G's. It definitely retains it
longer then the time it stays illuminated after
    I push the button.
Regular TV's will do it too after you turn them
off.....as least my bedroom TV does.

Oh, I thought it was the afterglow, when the EL had switched off.
All those Illumintaors glow a little and even when the EL has been shutoff yu can read the time in the dark..

If they describe it as electroluminescent backlight, then adding 'with afterglow' is surely a repetition if it means the same thing? Unless like someone said that it refers to an ability to make out the time after the light has gone off. Hmm
