Can someone tell me the difference between all these G-Shocks?

    Mudman? Riseman? Frogman?

What is going on here? Are these "official" names for different types of G-Shocks or are these slang terms?

Either way, what characteristics deem a watch a Frogman instead of some other type of *man?

I'm looking for an "introduction" to the very confusing world of G-Shock watches, as there seems to me thousands of different types.

I would like to get one, and like things like solar, countdown timers, stopwatch, etc, but my interest changes once I find out what's available

    Thanks!
    John

    Hi John,

These are actual official names of the current "Master of G" series. You forgot the Gulfman. The name of the model tells wherefore they can be used, Frogman for diving, Mudman is Mud resist, Riseman has an altimeter (and barometer and thermometer) and the Gulfman (non-atomic) has a tidegraph and moon phase.

    Cheers,

    Sjors

This will get you started on the basic history:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_G

Basically they are g-shock models with "specialty" features. Usually targeted to specific activity or activities.

I could be wrong (plenty of more experienced folks here will straighten me out if I am), but I believe the only models in regular production right now are the Gulfman, Riseman, and Mudman. The Frogman is also available in the Limited Edition line.

With the latest design facelifts - I find the Masters of G models to be some of the most compelling models offered - but it's all in what moves you personally.

Yes...but Protrek/Pathfinder watches do not have the same shock protection, nor are any ISO. And only the 1500 has 200m WR like a G, but again it's not ISO tested like the Frogman. Others have 100m WR at best (1/2 of any G).

The quotes below are great resources .
