Cheapest ABC watch for a "beginner" ?

I have a few G-shocks and would like an ABC watch, the thing is I'm not sure how much I'd actually use it. Really I'd like the compass, don't know how useful or what I'd use the other features for. Really my main concern is price, I don't want to pay too much since I'm not sure how much I'd use it. I was thinking of maybe an old pathfinder? all the model numbers confuse me though

I use the barometer and barograph more than any other ABC function.

There is only one model G-Shock that is ABC....the Rangeman.

Other ABC Casios are various Protrek models:

    For a compass-only watch, you can't beat the SGW-100:

    Amazon.com: sgw-100

For a full ABC watch, the PRG is a tremendous value:

    Amazon.com: prg-270

Both are no G's though but I wouldn't worry about that for a second.

I think the PRG-270 is a steal right now (edit: cal..45 has been posting at the same moment I see ) - same features as the PRW-3000 without the atomic reception however.

I really like that JDM all black model but its a bit out of my price range. I think if I get one it'd be solar too so I can play with the features all I want and not kill batteries. I'd like "atomic" but not necessary. Thanks everyone for the advice.

On the battery operated models how long do they last, I've seen a few cheap PAG40s but it takes 6(!) batteries I guess?

Usually I prefer batteries over solar but the PAG-40 design gotta be the worst ever. It takes 4 small silver-oxide batts (SR927W I believe) and the change is a pain in the butt. But aside from that, the PAG-40 is a fairly outdated design (it doesn't even have countdown timer if I remember correctly), I wouldn't seriously consider that watch if I were you. The SGW-100 I recommended runs on a CR2025 and should last many years, depending how often you use the compass, up to ten years is my guess. The PRG-270 got the latest V3 sensors (same as in the GW-9400 Rangeman) and not only the respomd faster, according to Casio they also require significant less power. Right now the PRG-270 seems to me the best and most locigal design for a rugged outdour watch, the PRW-3000 is nearly the same but with atomic capabilities. It does however not have the same tool watch character and the buttons are a bit more difficult to press.

    Amazon.com: prw-3000

Re: Cheapest ABC watch for a "beginner" ?

The cheapest AB"C" watch would probably be a SGW-300 with a strap compass attached btw . The battery should last quite some time and the SGW-300 is a great watch by itself anyway.
