    coloured LCD displays

    Hi Guys,

Does anyone know whether the coloured LCDs in G-Shocks are dyed or are they fitted with a coloured screen?

    cheers~

    Hi Sky,

It's really quiet simple answer actually. The LCD is transparent and colorless. To make it good visible there is placed a panel behind the LCD. Most of the times it's greenish, because our eyes are most sensitive for that color. With a red background, they have simply used a red reflecting panel.

    Cheers,

    Sjors

    Hi Sjors,

How about gold coloured LCDs? I heard that the liquid crystal is gold in colour:-S

Is there a possibilty that the liquid crystal is dyed?

    Thanks for enlightening me:thanks...

    cheers~

    Greetings All,
Skyhook I hope this graphic combined with Sjors's response gives a clearer picture:

This was taken from Wiki which also features another graphic with detailed annotation.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCD

    Hope this helps.

I think the LC is just that; a liquid that responds to the current. That a film is added for colour.

Actually thinking about it did you mean the models that have the digits appear in different colours? The picture of the RB Frogman threw me as I took it you meant coloured display background. Trying to be clearer, I'm asking if you meant the writing or the background of the watch.

P.S Interesting little paragraph about negative displays from wiki:
It is normal to align the polarizing filters so that pixels are transparent when relaxed and become opaque in the presence of an electric field, however the opposite is sometimes done for special effect.

Years ago I took apart a broken Timex with a green display. The GLASS on that particular model was dyed green (if I remember `correctly). That's another way to do it.I can tell you from personal experience that in low light conditions the plain old silver background gives better visability. Colored screens look cooler in normal light though.

Well, about the digit's... Liquid Crystals are often cholesterol derivates. Maybe there are derivates that are wavelenght specific in polarizing, so they only let through one color (probably mono chromatic). It's just guessing, but I think the answer to colored digit's have to be sought in that direction.

I thought we were talking about the background area around the segments, not the actual segments themselves.
