Does storing a G Shock without a battery harm it?

Any harm in storing a little used G Shock with no battery in it?

    I dont think so.

It will just decay if it where in use.
You can avoid damages by leaking batteries, thats a plus.
You have to open the watch more often to remove-insert the battery, thats a minus.

I would just do that if i would know that the storage time is longer then the battery life time (for Gs more then 7 years or so).

Short answer: I have other things I want to spend money on than batteries.

I have enough G's that I can picture not needing them all in rotation at the same time. I know that a low battery can cause problems...corrosion or worse. I just don't know if there is a downside (as in harming with watch) in having them battery free for a over a period of time.

I like the quote in your signature, BTW.

What i want to know is does storing a G with a dead battery harm it? My batt on dee & ricky died. Is it okay to leave a dead batt in there? I am in no rush to put a new one in it since im not going to wear it. Also im afraid of opening it up & i would not trust the service center here to do a good job either.

I think that there's a chance of the battery corroding and leaking, like if you leave batteries in anything for too long, and that may ruin the module. How likely that is, I have no idea. If you wanna be super safe, open it up and take it out. Practice on a G that you don't care about as much if you're really worried about botching, but there is almost nothing that can go wrong if you just pay attention, honestly.

Re: Does storing a G Shock without a battery harm it?

Dead batteries can be evil things.

I just found an old Mini MagLite that I thought I lost about six years ago. This past weekend I picked up an LED conversion kit for Mini Mags, and I just happened to choose to upgrade the one I had just found rather than the one I've been using since I "lost" the other one. The new LED bulb is great, and I was quite surprised to see that the old batteries were still working after all that time!

I had converted that flashlight to use an on/off tailcap 15 years ago, but the "conversion kit" came with a new one. "Well, I don't really need to put that one on but...oh, the new one 'clicks' on and off. Okay, then, new tailcap too!"

When I unscrewed the "old" tailcap, I was stunned at how much powdery leakage there was from the old batteries -- THAT WERE STILL WORKING! If I had thought about it, I SHOULD have taken some pictures to share here, but I was more worried about getting the battery leakage off my hands, the kitchen counter, and out of the inside of the flashlight.

The inside of the flashlight seemed to clean up okay, and it works just fine with fresh new batteries -- but I'm very glad that it didn't sit like that, corroding away for another couple of years!

It's probably a bad idea to deliberately leave a dead battery in a watch for the same reasons!

I have this image in my head of Sjors in full panic mode going through each of his 600+ G-Shocks and looking for ones with dead batteries to change out new ones.
