I think you should buy it. I bought one for this reason for about $30 (try a quick internet search).
Even better, you could try to buy your friend's old DW-5600C, the very famous "speed" gshock.

Spot on. Unfortunately, my friend's old DW-5600C is long gone.
His last memory was that the light didn't work, and I think it went to G-Heaven when his family moved house, and he went into the Navy.

    Thanks for the recommendation.
G-fever I have, for my list of G-wants now grows to:
    - restore my DW-1000
    - buy new:
    - DW-5600E
    - G-2300-9v
    - Frogman GW-200 something, but I don't really care for the Tripple Crown colors, so I may have to pass on this one if I have to go ICERC colors
    - GW-400
    - and the non-G: Pathfinder PAW-1200-3v or ProTrek PRG90-3v (only difference is atomic or non-atomic, right? or is there something I've missed?)

    So many G-Shocks these days.
My nostaglia kicks in and cries for the "simple-days" when there was simply and only the DW-5600C in my humble universe. I watched Casio G-Shock and DataBank watches with great interest throughout my years, but didn't buy much until recently when I finally discovered a G-Shock that had telememo and multi-schedule alarms-- plus solar. I seem to be coming out of some kind of Dark Ages-- for better or worse

It's really great fun to have found this forum!
    regards,
    James

When did your friend get his DW5600C ?
    DW5600C appeared in 1987, DW5200C in 1984.

You'll probably find your G5600 much better than DW-5600E.
    But DW-5600E looks so 80s...

I'm also interested in the PAW1200 and PRG90.
I didn't see any difference in their specs. But PRG90 is more difficult to find.

As far as I know, Casio has been making solar watches since recently (couple years). So you're not coming out of some dark age.
Something new is happening in the watch world with cheap and solid watches having solar+atomic synchro.

I asked my friend, and he thinks he got it before 1987.
I'm pretty sure he is correct, for he had his DW5x00 about the same time I had-- or just after I got-- my DW1000. But, we can't be sure, because that DW5x00 is long since gone. The light stopped working, and it was lost in a couple of family moves, given away(?), or thrown into the trash...or lost. He really didn't seem to remember it very well. He was actually more reminiscent of a Casio calculator watch he had (still has?) that had a numbers elimination game on it. I remembered that-- very cool fun.

I'm still waiting for the CTL1616 cell to arrive from Leon. I can't wait to install it in my G5600J. I am hoping the new cell will solve the Recovery issue, and that it is not a charging electronics problem. The watch has more regularly been going from full-charge straight into the flashing charge-soon with no LCD display. The G5600J even lost enough power so that the current time was reset to factory default(?): year 2000, January 1, 12:00, etc. Bummer.

I saw the PAW1200 at JCPenney. They had it on sale for US$202. Seemed a great price, but I can't afford that right now, and I would rather have the green one. This one at JCPenney was the black/dark gray with shiney bezel surround-- not for me.
    regards,
    James

Re: DW-5600E really only 2 year battery life?

I replaced the CR2016 (2yr battery life) with CR2025 (up to 10yrs battery life) in my DW5600E. It is a sham, Casio does not already install the CR2025, longer battery life in the DW5600E.
