DW-290-1V, though a nice watch itself, isn't even a G-Shock. It's tough watch, but not quite the same level of toughness as G-Shock. For a few more bucks, I'd choose the 5600E easily.

In functionality both watches are comparable.

When it come to toughness the 5600 wins because of the soft resin protection.
It will just longer look good because soft material is flexing rather then scratching.

The straps on both will have a limited lifetime, the bezel of the 5600 too.
But the bezel on the 5600 can be replaced while the hard plastic housing of the 290 will stay scratched.....

    I own both.

As d2mac has stated, the functionality is the same.

IMO, buy the DW-290 for the $27 and don't look back.

Only buy the DW-5600E if you like squares. To me the 290 has better ergonomics due to it's slightly larger size and bigger buttons. Yes the 290 has a hard outer resin bezel. Big deal. Someone here has had one for 20? years and bought another even though the first one still works/looks fine.

I like the squares and had and have many of them. But to me the 290 is a better watch. Also do not worry about the light blue printed lettering on the case. It will wear off and make the watch look much tougher. You can also buy the Wal-Mart fast wrap they have at their watch counter for around $7.00 and replace the plastic strap to make the watch look even better.

    Re: DW290-1V vs DW5600E-1V

I own both watches as well, and agree with everybody else on virtually everything that's been said so far. They're both great watches, especially at those prices!

If you search this forum, you'll find several threads about the DW-290 and how many of us here view it as an "honorary G-Shock." The electronic module inside WAS used in a couple of actual G-Shocks, but as noted above the DW-290 isn't quite a G despite the same scratch-resistant mineral crystal. There are also several threads talking about how the DW-5600E may just be the best "bang for the buck" of all of the G-Shock models, even though it's the "entry level G-Shock."

Both watches have identical features in terms of the alarm, timer, and stopwatch. The DW-5600E is more shock resistant because of the soft resin bezel, which is replaceable. If you want to use an aftermarket strap in the future, there are probably more options available for the 18mm strap on the DW-290, since the DW-5600E uses a somewhat proprietary 16mm strap.

And if you want to speed up the process of the blue-green letters on the case of the DW-290, a little fingernail polish remover on a cotton ball will remove the paint without harming the plastic case:

Thanks! It's a Chums "The Band". I think I got mine on eBay but they're available all over: https://www.chums.com/watchbands

    Buy DW-5600E it's true G-Shock, not "almost g-shock" like DW-290.

For the extra $13 you may as well get the G

The DW5600E is my personal favourite too
