what's your thinking process when ordering this watch ? the look ? the brand ? the inexpensive-ness ?

if it's your first digital watch then I'd understand, but it is not, isn't it ?

Federal agents and NASA people wear it for some reason. Was hot s*** before g-shocks came along.

It's from the day where 200M meant it would actually go down to 200M.

I bought one off the back of this discovery, thanks to the thread from liquidus2172 earlier this year:

It's a fun, funky-looking watch, except for the strap which is a let down, as the OP mentions.

I can't speak for the OP, but I got myself a DW-290 after seeing it discussed here several years ago. It has a great, simple, classic module -- time; alarm/chime; CDT; STW (and current time is visible in STW and CDT modes). It has a cool (I think) slightly retro, slightly geeky look to it; it is very inexpensive; it has a very close to G-Shock feel about it. What's not to like?

great watch, after trying and failing to score a DW-340 I shlepped out 40 bucks for the 290,great beater and its a nice size.
Sears in Albany NY has some in the spinner for 24.95.martin lawrence sported one in a comedy bout 10 years ago.some rag on the band but I find it pretty soft and comfortable.

Had one of these when it first came out. Don't know what I did with it!
