    G Shock in the USA

Im new here and to the world of watch collecting. It does not seem like there are much collecting going on here compared to Japan and some others. So is there a market for collectable G's in the US? It seems to me that this hobby has not taken off here. Will it ever take off?

I think its more of a subculture collecting....

I also think the price and brand has to do with the small interest group.

edit: can't forget most collectors like automatic watches over quartz

I think it could or would IF !! Casio would do a decent advertising campaign in the states ! They seem to just be fine with them selling there self with very little push in the USA !

Well maybe we should start a g shock US club...LOL. Could it be that the resale of g's are very low. Meaning that if you buy a g for $100 you wont get that back. You will be lucky if you get half that. Anyway I say lets start a club.

    Hi Mich -

Nice to meet you and welcome to the forum

I lived in Japan for many years and I used to collect, infact to the point that I once ahd virtually every G-Shock from start to finish

You are correct as the local Japanese collectors market is HUGE!

Having said that, since I started selling off my collection, 90% of my buyers for the original old classics, mainly Master Of G's, are infact Americans

It's made me feel half American after meeting and chatting with so many, and I really admire and respect you guys as you have a great country and the people are so fair dinkum, no worries, take it easy kinda people with great sense of humours.

The last 10% of my buyers originate from Asia. Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, with a sprinkle from Europe.

I know Thai people love to collect and they love vintage stuff. They have a fine eye for quality.

So basically to answer your question, yes, American's love to spend money on the older quality G's, although I find not really to collect but rather to wear and use

OZZIE, Thanks and its great to meet you too. Thats a great bit of info. These watches are great to wear and collect and I do hope to see more of us collecting them.

OZZIE I have a questions for you then. If there is still a market for these then why is it on the selling forums people are having a hard time selling their rare G's? Is it because people on here already have them? I just bought a frogman MIS from a seller here at a great price, but it had been posted for some time so he was lowering the price.. I dont plan on selling it like he thought I was going to, but instead get a nice collection going. Cant wait to get it!!!:thanks

    Hi Mich -

Hahahaha - I have no ideaB-)

I suppose some are scared, worried or sceptical, other's haven't got the money.

You really have no protection buying from an online forum. With EBay, you have some sort of protection toppled in with Pal Pal. If the seller has a business account, you should be covered for fraud.

Don't get me wrong. Most sellers on the forum you can trust. Take SKHOOK for example.

He is selling MUDMAN'S and their is a sales post on the STICKY. He has been bombarded with full respects and thank you's for his six star service from start to completitition so word of mouth is very important.

I recently purchased a GW-9000 MUDMAN of forum member Bryan. Simplay par excellence service, full communiacation, and full peace of mind. The postage was extremely fast, so I know he was determined to rush the buyers product out, toppled in with the postal and customs service postage method.

I have found that most forum users don't want to spend big $$$ on watches as you can see from the posts.

Someone put a poll up in regards to how much is the maximum you would spend.

    Click this link.
    https://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=22636

    You will see the results.

I've also listed a few G-Shock's on the sales forum from time to time. I won't mention models here, but I listed one for $195, mainly for fun and to offer a good price, did not get any replies whatsoever, although that model was on my website for $550 shipped, and I listed one on EBay and it sold for $590 plus shipping:-D

The forum obviously has a limited audience so I guess that's another reason.

All in all, I would say 99% of my private buyers, do not know anything about fourms and neither did I until I navigated a link from one of my buyers personal EBay pages.

I get email's everyday from people around the world who have found me on GOOGLE.

They are usually very excited that they have found me and cannot believe that they can actually purchase a rare G-Shock from me.

So their are so many reasons and thought's I guess.. It's just best to go with your feelings, and remember to always be very careful, who you are paying, what are you getting, new, used, original receipts if you suspect fraud, etc.

Hope this helps now it's off to the beach for me:-D

I really don't see there ever being a huge market for collectible G-Shocks in the US. Good quality watches aren't a huge deal in the US to begin with. Then try to convince the US market that plastic digital watches are collectible. Not happening.
