G-shock Frogman??? Nooooooooo, nobody here in the g-shock forum knows anything about it!

The main guy you want is Deepsea_dweller.

    What are your specific questions?

The Frogman is a classic, and well built. But for functions and a military feel, Rangeman or Mudmaster all the way.

Actually for an ex military type, look into a Marathon watch. It is a Canadian company who makes them and they are a company that has contracts to make watches for the Canadian and US Military. You can get a nice quartz JSAR or a automatic GSAR.

Here is my GSAR with the US. Govt dial. They make a Canada version with the maple leaf on the dial

Yes, it's a real scientific phenomenon that obscure mad scientists only recently discovered.

    Re: Gshock Frogman

as far as functionality goes, the frogs dont really have much more than the usual unless you enjoy some of the novelties of the non comprehensive logging of dive data. theyre well built and have a unique look to them... which brings me to asking, why choose the frog in the first place? when you ask for something practical, do you mean practical with lots of functions or practical as in every day wear, easy to read etc.?

the 3 big factors when choosing a G (or any watch i guess) is - fit, functions and looks, all of which are weighted differently depending on the person and the purpose so instead of just buying him one and hoping he likes it, why not take him on an outing or two where he can try them on? if hes not familiar with them it would be a much better experience and a memorable bday to spend some bonding time with his kid.

of course it wouldnt hurt to have a short list of ones to look at before hand, that you could run by him, sure it wont be a surprise but to get something he really likes would be far better in the long run cos you know he'll wear and enjoy it more.

if youre keen on the frogs check out the gf8250 and the gwfd1000 (these are large so a test fit would be ideal). after that the crowd pleasers would be the gw9400 rangeman (theres no such thing as a rangemaster) and the gwg1000 mudmaster. the gprb1000 rangeman is an option but that would depend on your budget and again that guy is huge.
as mentioned above, there are plenty of protreks that could be contenders, theyre generally lower profile and smaller than their G counterparts so that could be a plus or minus depending on what he likes/fits well.
coming down the line, others that you might consider, the gwn1000 gulfmaster or a selection of mid range aviators or g steels. into the budget range youll be looking at the 9300 mudmans, gd350, gd400, 8900, 7900 series

all the models i mentioned are readily available and can be found new so you wont need to hunt around too much
