Off Topic post GW-5000 vs. GMW-B5000G-1 Shootout!!! Comparison, pros/cons, thoughts??

lol When I was a teen and into dirt biking, every time I picked up a dirt bike magazine comparing two or more bikes, they'd always call it a "shootout!" That's the reason I used that in the subject..

Having just received the GMW-B5000G-1, I'm thinking it might be nice to hear members' thoughts on these two watches. Which one do you like better, and why? If you have a GW5K, would you ever replace it with one of the GMW squares? (this one or another version?)

To me, the GMW is like a cousin of the GW5K. One that likes to dress a little more fancy. Notice the brushing and polishing on the keeper AND buckle.. There's that cool metal bezel, and of course, larger buttons.

I know some (many?) of you are diehard GW5K fanatics and would never replace it with another square. I don't ever plan to let go of mine. Right now the GW-5000 serves as my overnight watch and my tough-as-nails square that can stand up to anything. The GMW-B5000G-1 I'll probably wear when I want to "up" the level of bling a little and/or if I decide to wear a metal square as a beater.

    My favs about the GW-5000:
    • all-resin outerwear,
    • unassuming (hides its DLC case back from casual observer),
    • EL backlight (a BIG plus!)
    • the L-M-H on the dial!!
    • it's a modern classic!

    My favs about the GMW:
    • metal bezel,
    • larger buttons,
    • improved module (I know, some of you won't agree),
    • BT capability (again, a plus for me - not for everyone),
    • brick pattern on dial, and
    • improved buckle and keeper, IMO. (its buckle seems to be a little more substantial also)

IMO both screens are equally legible and both straps are equally soft and supple.

*** EDIT: I JUST noticed now looking at the pics, that the GMW has a slight BLUE-ISH tint to the screen, while the GW5K does not!! It really does look that way in person! Thoughts on that???

Anyhow, for me there's room for both. Feel free to post pics of your 5000 and/or fav GMW!!

I've seen many Gs with matte and polished keepers, but this is the first matte and polished buckle I've noticed! Nice detail, Casio!

Absolutely agree with you. My GMWB5000G1 has blueish tint. STN is good to have but slightly overrated. I love them both. Same lighting condition

    What I like about GMWB5000:
    Big buttons
    Adjustable backlight duration
    New module
Metal parts are well designed and executed it just look and feel premium. Brick pattern is a killer.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I wish it has lounder alarm

GW-5000 just an understated and reliable watch that's what I like.

I honestly cannot choose to have just one.

Tough call, how about this for a compromise?

Umfortunately, I don't have either one, but the GW5000 was my first love in the world of squares.

Great thread T4Pnow. If someone is on the market for either watch, this should be a goldmine for first hand user experience.

I often think about getting a metal square, but can't decide which one. I don't think it would be a resin strapped version - if I want resin I'm covered with the GW5000. The steel bezel doesn't warrant an extra watch in my book.

Bigger buttons would be nice to have, but I'd rarely use Bluetooth. Again, not material differences and I don't want that kind of overlap between my watches, because I'm limiting my collection to 6, maybe 7 pieces. Flipping the GW5000 is out of the question.

So I still play the waiting game until a titanium and/or DLC model or something irresistible comes out.

I do wish there were a compromise—resin bezel is more my speed. I like the LED backlight, and someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the new module shows current time in stopwatch and countdown modes. If they added an instant one-button stopwatch like the GW-9400 I’d be a happy camper indeed!

    Nice comparison and photos.

    GW-5000 vs. GMW-B5000G-1

Well both are pretty cool to have. I have the GW-5000 and had the GMW-B5000 version that was all stainless steel

    Pros of the GMW-B5000

    1. Very solid looking and feeling
    2. Has atomic solar and BT capabilities
    3. is attractive

    Cons
    1. On the rubber strap version, you are relying on Casio to have spare straps as no other strap will work on the watch.
    2. The watch can be a huge scratch magnet
    3. Blue Tooth seems a bit flaky at times.
    4. No "at a glance" battery life monitor

All in all a good watch.

Now the GW5000 is as about as perfect a G-Shock that you can get. It is solar/atomic and stainless steel case that is covered by a bezel that 30 years from now you should be able to get replacements for.

The only issues I have with the GW5000 is that I hate the black coated caseback. Mine has actually started to wear. I also wish the watch had the brick motif that the original DW-5000 had. The GMW-B5000 has this brick motif so it should not impact the solar panel.

    But these are small quibbles

I think the GW5000 can be had for cheaper then the GMW-B5000 and in my case my GW-5000 was bought from a seller in Japan and it arrived 3 days after I bought it via EMS

Miklos if you are going to have just one metal square, then I agree, it should be ALL metal. IMO the GMW-B5000D-1 is hard to beat! Have you seen one in person? IMO you won't get the full flavor of the watch from photos. Also the B5000GD-9 gold square is very nice.

Truthfully, if I could have only ONE of these two, I'd keep the GW5K... The bigger buttons of the GMW are nice but I can easily do without. The module is nicer but the GW5K's module is adequate. I do wish the GW5K had the brick pattern on the dial but that's a minor quibble. My GW5K does sync very, very reliably. And I'm probably at least 1,500 miles from the transmitter. I also LOVE its EL backlight! And let's not forget, it's quite a bit cheaper. You can pick up a GW5K now for around $250. I got what I think is a great deal on the GMW, for $325.

That said, for now I'm keeping both!

Thanks. And yes, the new module does indeed show current time in stopwatch and timer modes. The GMW's variable light duration is nice, but for whatever reason I prefer the EL backlights over the LEDs.

Re: GW-5000 vs. GMW-B5000G-1 Shootout!!! Comparison, pros/cons, thoughts??

    I was disappointed with GW5000.
The resin case was not smooth and scratching my wrist.
But I love the heft and smoothness of my GWMB5000.
I mean the Silver. I'm lost in the order of the letters. I name it my Full Metal G-Shock.
I love it ever more since I have decided to undo the Bluetooth connection.
Now I got a nice RCVD icon showing me it has been able to connect to an antenna far away.
Much more romantic than looking for my phone.
I don't mind about the battery level as it is not stored in the dark.
My Full Metal G-Shock got everything at the right place in terms of ergonomy.
This picture is not mine but it reflect my thoughts about it.
