Have you seen the digital shimmer?

Like most owners we inspect our new watches, sometimes with a microscope. Reading up on G Shocks it's been mentioned there are characters printed on obscure places on the dial which may or may not have meaning - there they are, if we but look.

Out comes my pocket flashlight, I'm nearly 20/400 so I don't really need a magnifier, and I go looking. Around the dial, the markers (its a GAX 100B) and then

    Woah

The negative display shows an interesting phenomenon - Tends to shimmer at certain angles - you can see the refresh rate as a slight irridescence. There's a light vibrating rainbow affect.

I was using an LED in the white range, about 40 lumens which isn't super bright (enormous compared to ten years ago) and it may be contributing in some way. Don't know.

Enjoy the light show. First person to post a pic of it wins the internet.

Most of my negative display Casios have a flicker under certain lighting. Some are more prone to this than others.

isnt it something to do with resonating frequency of the lcd coming close to that of a light source/your eye? its like old computer monitors and tv's being around 60hz which matches fluro lighting.
could be worse, you could see flickering lights normally like me >_< not all lights but alot of times ive been in shops where it looks like a strobe is going but no one else can see it. yep, im a freak lol :(

I see the flicker when viewing the LCD under direct sunlight from particular angles, so it's not the frequency of the light source in this case.

your not alone, i see the swirl and flicker of florescent light tubes. i hate offices that use egg crate style diffusers and have exposed bulbs. it will give me a headache after some time.

I've seen it in bright sunlight. Sort of annoying to me as it affects legibility.

I've seen it with the older flourescents, too. And yes, it can bring on a headache - and you have to wonder if it's doing that how the employees handle it long term. Might explain things.

I agree it's probably a refresh rate on the LCD screen when viewed thru the polarizer at a particular angle. I've got a Casio SGW which hasn't been forthcoming, but the negative windows on the GAX do it.

At first I thought you meant the sparkling shimmer of the LCD surface. You can see that in some models, as just a characteristic of the LCD sandwich layer. On some models, like the G-2000LV, it's intentionally iridescent. What you describe is more of a "flicker", and I've noticed it particularly when photographing G-Shocks in the sunshine. On both neg and pos displays.
