Help me choose my first G-Shock

My last cheap digital 'tough' watch has just died so I'm considering a cheap(ish) G-Shock to replace it.

I've gone round and round looking at different models but *think* I want a model with both Solar and Atomic features but am open to reconsideration of that.

The entry-level square DW-5600 has neither of those features but the price is certainly good at $46. I would be prepared to pay the extra $45 to get a GWM-5610 which has the same 'vintage' look but with the added solar/atomic features. Is it worth the extra for those features? I do like the under-the-radar look of these models but the lack of a reverse button is what gives me some pause for thought although, not having owned one, I don't know how important that is or isn't and would appreciate your thoughts on that.

An alternative is the round-faced GWM-500A which has the three subdials above the main display. They look a little bit small to be clearly legible but they do seem to add more information to the main display than the classic models above. At $66 on Amazon it is certainly good value.

Any other models I should consider as a one and only G-Shock?

    Thanks for your help.

45$ for solar, MB6 and more advanced functionality is totally worth it.
What you like is up to you. Square is among most comfortable and universal G-Shocks yet GWM-500A are also very nice and have bigger font which is bonus.
There are surprisingly plenty to choose from even at mere 50-90$.
I suggest to go with what you find most comfortable and attractive. There almost no downsides in choosing any Casio watch. Some are obviously better but even at 50$ you get very solid, durable and quality watch.
GWM-500A MSRP is 120$ so it in higher class compared to regular 5600.
I love squares so it would of been my choice, but i had experience with GWM500 (not A model) and it's solid watch. New model brings timer and better MB6 reception all together very welcome improvements.
So if i had only 60$ and it would of been my only watch GWM500A would of been my choice. Solar and MB6 are that nice to have!
    It should be special!

Make a favour to yourself and get a good one.

It might also be your only one.

Spend the little bit extra on the GWM-5610 and you can take it from there in you G Shock adventure.

Thanks, but that's more than I'm willing to spend for my first G-Shock.

Another one to consider as an alternative to the GW-M5610 is the GW-6900.

The module in the GW-6900 has a few advantages over the one in the GW-M5610:

    1) The backlight duration can be set to 1.5 or 3 seconds, rather than being fixed at 1.5 seconds.
    2) A second time zone can be viewed on the main timekeeping screen (dual time).
    3) The dedicated light button.

As always, try the watch on in person if you can. The fit of the GW-6900 is quite different from that of the GW-M5610, because the strap tends to flare out a lot more at the wrist. Some people have changed this by putting the GW-6900 on a GW-5000 strap, which is very soft and flares out less.

+1 to what Gary said, try it on first. There is nothing worst than a watch that doesn't fit good. I have a couple that "looked" cool but just are not comfortable.
