    I know it grows in Malaysia. I took this picture two weeks ago. Everyone I've asked in Malaysia says they know it but they don't know what its called.

    i'm curious too, i've never ever seen anything like that over here
    in theory, theory and practice are much less the same, in practice it is hardly the case...

    Yes. I've been told by one person that the brown nut can be eaten like chestnuts, and by another person that it is used mostly in Chinese desserts.

    A friend has suggested it might actually be Pheng phok or China(ese) chestnuts, Sterculia monosperma. This looks like to me as well. We have a closely related and also edible species here in Oz call the Peanut Tree, Sterculia quadrifida. It looks almost identical.
