    Help a Newbie!!

I'm in the process of bringing better watches into my meager collection. One of the check boxes on that list is upgrading my Timex Ironman. The 2 options I have it narrowed down to are the Casio Pathfinder (PRW2500T-7CR) and the high end G Shock with the radio reception feature (just seems like a cool watch).

What do you guys think about the 2. The more I think about it, the more I think the G-Shock model is not worth the $100+ premium.

    Welcome to the forum!

Just to be sure, which high-end g-shock are we talking about?
55 watches. 30 Casios. Appalling bank balance!

    This one:

Casio G-SHOCK Sky Cockpit Solar Radio Multiband 6 GW-A1000FC-2AJF (Japan Import): Watches: Amazon.com

I travel across time zones fairly frequently for work, so at least the trick is somewhat useful. Looking forward to everyone's thoughts.

    The A1000 without thinking twice.
But what do you need in the watch? Depending on your needs there are cheaper alternatives in terms of G-Shocks.

    Welcome!

Pathfinders are cool, but I like G-Shocks better in general. And that's a nice G.

You've picked a Ti protrek... I heard they don't hold up well with wear - the Titanium does scratch easily, whereas the A1000FC comes with a combi bracelet which I personally think is fantastic and more durable. But If you can live without a bracelet style watch, you can find the A1000s quite a bit cheaper.

The solar/atomic combo works great with any all analogue watch IMO, just put it on and you know the time is accurate, no fiddling required! The G shock will no doubt be the tougher watch out of the two, but the only thing you'll have to bear in mind that the A1000 is quite a chunky watch, it won't have the slim profile of the Protrek.

Two great watches to pick from! I have to clarify a little.

The protrek will hold well, just scratches a little easy. Do you have a need for the altimeter/barometer? If so, you might consider this one.

My preference is for the GWA1000.

You asked about atomic, do you live somewhere or spend the night once every couple of months where there is reception? If so then all good.

Awesome. Thanks guys. You've all been really informative! I'm a big guy so the case diameter doesn't bother me too much. Looks like I may be going G Shock after all! :)

    Re: Help a Newbie!!

What do you do with your watches?
Do you need any special features?
$500 is a lot for a G, and knowing what you want to do will help narrow it down.
If you're a climber the pathfinder might be a better choice, if you're a diver then maybe the G.
If you just like nice watches and don't care, probably the G.
    Best regards,
    Chris
