Right, there is no speaker, so to speak. I think the "beep" is created by a contact spring that is touching a special part of the caseback.

Well, there is some kind of speaker in a G Shock, they are called piezoelectric speakers.. If you look on the inside of the backplate you will find a small circle is stuck to it, that is the "speaker"... It's really hard to explain how it works (being an audio noob) XD
    Current (Little) Watch collection:

    G Shock GD100-3MS
    G Shock GW6900-1ER
    Random Seiko quartz
    Casio F-91W
    Timex Ironman (circa 1992)

    Lame collection ftw... XD

Well i have a DW-6900 but i can't find any circle like you said. I think if the sound comes from inside of the watch, it's shouldn't be so loud

On the inside of the caseback is a piezo speaker installed. It looks like a flat
Circle. When a small current is sent through it (via the infamius alarm spring) the while back vibrates at high frequency. It works as piezo tweeters. They don't actually have to look like speakers. Funny detail is that Seiko made a model with a tiny speaker that looks like a tiny speaker.

Check some battery change reviews. I think you eventually will see that speaker.

On the inside of the case-back is a metal disc which is an alarm pad, the alarm pads are Piezo electric audible alarms. They are made up of Piezo crystal wafers bonded to a metal disc, an electric current is passed through the Piezo wafers via a metal contact between the module and the metallic surface of the alarm pad which makes the disc vibrate at an audible level creating an alarm. The gap between the caseback and the module acts as a resonance chamber, the larger and more tuned the shape of the cavity is the louder and more tuneful the alarm is.

Here's the inside of a DW6900 caseback, you can clearly see the alarm pad. The surface is metallic and the thickness is created by the Piezo crystal wafers.

Here's the piezo speaker on the back of a DW-9550. Just found it on my 50 Gs weblog.
