I read that article and the only thing that jumped out at me was the fact that the guy paid too much for it used. You can buy a new for that price. ;)

Yeah, he lives in central Pennsylvania, so no problem with finding a good deal on eBay. Maybe he's a terrible shopper? Heck, if I'm going on a trip to Iceland I'd bring more than one watch. But I think he took this DW-5600E to prove a point, that even the cheapest G-Shock can handle most anything a civilian might throw at it.

EDIT: But really, in retrospect, he didn't challenge the watch at all. Any other watch by a respectable maker would've done just fine. Now, rake it through the mud, smack it up against stone walls and yes... the DW-5600E would prevail.

That's what I got out of it, that even entry level G's are capable of handling the activities one might endure while traveling. If you aren't comfortable taking your expensive autos/divers away the DW5600 is all you really need. Maybe also the point was what do people actually need in a watch anyway.

A relatively inexpensive, functional and reliable watch that flies under the radar, DW5600E fits the bill :)

    Re: Interesting Article..

If I was considering $45 to spend on a used G-Shock, I'd bump it up a little to about $75... as the opportunity for so many other models opens up. Even just $30 more amortized over many years of ownership becomes inconsequential. Presuming of course, ownership is intended for the long haul.

I am amused by people that treat Iceland like Mordor. Maybe I am just used to that sort of weather. I was tickled by the tourists wearing brand new Arc'teryx or Patagonia, head to toe, for their trendy coffee in downtown Reykjavik.

I brought my PRG-270 (only wore it once to get the temp in a natural hot spring, 37 C) and my Tuna was on my wrist the rest of the time. Beautiful country though.

What I found sort of funny was this:
"I needed a watch that could withstand a lot of punishment, including late-night partying, swimming, muddy ATV riding, long flights, showering and sleeping".
Swimming and muddy ATV riding aside, are there actually watches that can't handle late night partying, long flights and sleeping?
