That's quite a nice beater
"When the shadow of the sash appeared in the curtains it was between seven and eight o'clock and then I was in time again, hearing the watch. It was Grandfather's and when Father gave it to me he said I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire.... I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all your breath trying to conquer it."
--William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury (1929)
Over the years, my 'beaters' have been among my very favorite watches. They
have stories to tell that the other watches never get close to. It's not about the
price of the watch. To me, it's more about their character.
For 6 years an AP Offshore Titanium Perpetual Chronograph was my 'beater.' It logged
over 40k miles on western motorcycle tours, rafted the snake and salmon rivers, and
hiked up Beartooth Pass and Mount Washington.
When it finally needed servicing, I sent it to the AP Service Center in NYC. This was
before they moved to Florida. I sent it by UPS. It made it to the UPS Distribution facility
in Long Island City, NY, and then disappeared—disappeared out of a secure lock-up
inside the most secure part of their building...Hmmmm.
Anyway, thank God I had it insured.
I think about that watch quite often and have NEVER used UPS for anything
I should have driven (or trained) it the 90 miles to NYC—so lesson learned!
^ I wouldn't hold a grudge against UPS for one package. Their reliability record is excellent. You just got very unlucky... but at least your package was insured. I've found USPS Priority Mail is very reliable. They seem to take "priority" class very seriously.
Beautiful watch. I have been drooling after one of these... but I'm trying to use the culling of my collection as incentive. Must sell off a bunch of watches as I'm entering a mandatory downsizing phase. I wish I didn't have to do this, but... that's life. If I do OK on sales, it'll fund my dream G-Shock.
