Have you seen one in the flesh, they are virtually unreadable in all but the brightest conditions, even indoors they can be difficult to read.

I dont mean to sound harsh, but if I was still serving this is one G-shock I would avoid, it might come "stealthed" however it will be completely unreadable in lowlight conditions. Then I guess that depends on your role...

Just got my second one it today, I took it on trade from another WUS member, I usually just use the back light when ever I need to know the time! I was not aware there was going to be a Green 7900? That is the one I will just have to have!! I just got in a second GW-9000 in today also part of a trade and put it on my green strap and bezel and it looks sweeeeet!!!

Here's what it looks like much of the time. I consider it almost a tour-de-force or inside joke on the theme of stealth. If I needed the time in the matter of an instant, I wouldn't rely on this watch. But it does look very cool!

And in those few times you hit the light just right, you'll get this:

Greg, nice shots and they really show the issues with the watches display, only having a very narrow field of view in bright conditions.

The idea of using the watch in a similar fashion to a LED by utilizing the backlight is fine. however in a military environment your hands are frequently tied up with equipment and or weapons so not entirely practical.

The new solar GW-6900 would make an excellent military watch, I saw one recently and was highly impressed with the displays high contrast, ease of readability, and lower profile. If Casio does the same with the DW-6600 display it would be awesome.

Exactly. This is one of the least suitable military watches I can think of.

Numbers 2, 4 and 7 below, on the other hand...
I used to list my watches here until I realised it ruined people's Google searches...
