just found something out about the illumination on G-Shocks. I always thought the G-8000 is the only G-Shock that doesn't turn off the light when starting the stopwatch or changing modes - guess what - I was wrong! You can get almost every G-Shock (at least the newer ones) to do this. The trick is simply to mute them (my G-8000s are always muted - therefore I thought they were the only ones where the light stays on). When the watch doesn't beep anymore when pressing a button the light stays on and you can easily use the functions in total darkness. Casio designed them so that not too much strain is put on the battery - so sound and light don't go together. Even on the rally timer function on the GW-9010/GW-M850 the sound and EL-flasher don't work at the same time but slightly offset. This 'tweak' works best on G-Shocks where you can set the illumination duration to 3 sec or more. It doesn't work on the G-7800 however since the LED flashes when changing modes and EL and LED don't work at the same time - but you can at least start the stopwatch or timer without the light switching off when in mute mode.
