Looking for first G, any suggestions?

Hello, I am in need of a new watch and am liking what I am seeing with the G-shocks.
One feature I really want is the time showing in the stopwatch and countdown timer modes. I know some G's do this but not all.
Some models that have caught my eye, although they don't have the features I want, are:

G7800 (only show white on US website, and I would want black)
    GX 56
Mudman (maybe a bit too small for my taste)
GD-100 (is this available in the US yet?)

Looked at the GW-700 today and saw the time in the stopwatch mode, but no countdown timer and that is something I use a lot.

Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks.

Any of the GX56 King of Gshock models are fantastic. Also the GA-100's and GA-110C's and either GD-100's. Good Luck!!!

I would probably get my feet wet with a classic, either a dw6900 or dw6600.

GLW6900 is a good starter. Large, easy to read display...

Except for the DW-6900 none of the models listed so far show time in stopwatch and timer mode. Here's a few that do:
    DW-5600E
    G-8000
    GWX-5600 (only 60 min stopwatch)
    G-3010 (only 60 min stopwatch)
    G-3011 (60 min STW)
GW-9200 (24 hr stopwatch and timer)
of course all the ana-digi models show time in all modes. My favourite: GW-2500B
a few non-Gs that have this:
SGW-300 (one of my personal favourites)
almost all Protrek models (might even be every Protrek model but I'm not sure)

    Greetings, Sedi
    Cheers

It's true but sometimes it's difficult to see the information on the LCD when the hour/minute hands are right on the top of it, it's an annoying experience with my Illuminator as I do jogging regularly. The problem is cured with my new Riseman which is 100% digital.

Out of the models you mention in your post, I own a G-7800b and it has become a permanent addition to my collection. I believe these are getting harder to get by, so if you are thinking of getting one I wouldn't let it go for too long. One of the best modules from Casio.
