OK, So this really deserves an answer: Is a Quartz G-Shock really worth $7400??? I mean, yeah, it's got... WAY too cool features and world time and... but Rolex... or G-Shock... ?

I'm not in the market for $7400 watch but if I was it's CASIO>ROLEX for me.
In fact NO WATCH>ROLEX for me but at the level of this watch it's not about pure functionality, this is jewelry and everyone has a different sense of 'value' IMHO.

I just wonder what the differences are between the MRG G1000 for about 3K and the MRG G2000 for about 7.5K
That's a more intriguing question to me.

There are some minor differences in the module - for ex, "triple connect" with Bluetooth and a 12-hr world time sub-dial on the G2000. Then, some differences in texture to the bezel, and center links. That's about it, from what I can tell.

Both watches are made out of titanium with DLC, and it's pretty easy to tell that the cases are exactly the same. The bracelets are as well with the exception of the texturing (hammering?) on the center links of the 2000.

As an owner of the MRG-G1000B, even if I was crazy about the G2000, no way I'd pay that kind of price. IMO, if anything, it should have been no more than $500 above the G1000's price...

    Re: MRGG2000HT-1A ... The $7400 G-Shock...

Maybe I just don't understand the appeal of a G-Shock. I mean, they're rugged as hell, and I get the utility of many of them - but not what makes them worth $3000.

I'm really not trying to be insulting to G-Shock fans! Seriously!

It's just that the $7400 and $3000 versions look the same as a $120 G-Shock to me. (I know there's levels - I mean, the Atomic Time/GPS thing adds a couple hundred - so I can see going into the $500-1000 range depending on the features).

I've seen $300-500 G-Shocks that seemed worth it to me. Just didn't expect a $3000+ level.

What makes them so much more special?

And to an earlier poster's comment about Rolex: I used to feel the same way. Then I started learning more about the brand, and how they do what they do. Would I pay even $5000 for one? Probably not. Certainly not $10,000+ (unless we're talking a gaudy diamond encrusted hunk of solid Gold, where the diamonds and gold are worth more than the watch...) Hell - we all know that Rolex's don't cost more than about $600 for them to make from front to back (precious metals/gems excluded)... so 90%+ of the price is brand value... like a Patek...

Just personally not sure about Casio G-Shock.... maybe it's the fact that I remember they used to make (still do, I think) calculator watches...

I'd love for someone here to convince me otherwise - because I know there's something "there" there...

As you can see from my little avator pic, I own the MRG-G1000B-1A. I'm not going to try to convince you that it's "worth" $3k. That's a fruitless thing to do, as everyone sees value in watches differently and places importance on different things.

I will try to answer your question that I highlighted. What makes it special, and different than a $120 g-shock?

    • It is constructed of all-titanium, for starters. (most g-shocks have resin cases) It is also hardened titanium with DLC coating over the entire case and bracelet.
    • Premium-level construction. Its case is made in the same factory that produces Grand Seiko and Credor watch cases.
    • Great craftsmanship. Zaratsu polishing is used on certain areas of the case and band.
    • Latest technology - Global Positioning System for time and position sync, in addition to Multiband 6.

That, plus it also has shock and vibration resistance found in other g-shocks.

IMO, there is not another watch out there with the combination of materials, craftsmanship, technology, AND toughness that the MRG has.

    Re: MRGG2000HT-1A ... The $7400 G-Shock...

The thing that makes the HT (Hammer Tone) model so special and expensive is that the HT pattern is done by hand by a single master blacksmith, so each one is unique and one of a kind.
My family used to own a tableware store and we sold crystal glasses that were machine cut and engraved perfectly for a certain price that would put regular glasses to shame, however if you went for a hand cut and engraved glasses that were each one unique, a single glass costed more than the whole set of machine cut ones, although the machine cut ones were more 'perfect'
So you pay a premium for a hand made product that requires skill of a man who has been honing that skill for years, and that COSTS!!
Weather its 3.000 more worth it, I don't know, but VALUE and watches don't make a lot of sense sometimes
