So I've been inot G-Shocks for a a few months now and already developed quite an addiction. I bought a few at Watch It and The Bay which I know are legit, but I also got some on Ebay, which seemed legit at first but as I learned and researched, I now think they might be fakes. Here's what I got.

Watch #1- GA-110 MB, black, Module 5146 Is 100% real as I purchased it at The Bay. Here are some factors I have researched that determine this one to be a genuine G-Shock.

    1. All the time zones, function beep, auto light, timer, alarms, stopwatch, and how to sync the digital and analog time all work as per the manual.
    2. Between the 8 and the 9 there are 3 dots
    3. The case screws are not pointy and resemble bolts more than screws
    4. When I set the digital time backwards, such as 09:52 back to 09:50 for example, the minute hand sweeps backwards to sync up to the digital time
    5. The inserts for the screws on the upper 4 corners are in a starwheel pattern
    6. The buckle is Stamped "Casio China" and the backplate says cased in China (I also have Thailand and Japan buckles that I bought from the Bay, which are legit so this might be an irrelevant detail)
    7. The tin had markings underneath, the cardboard box was smaller than watch #2 and retail tags, warranty card and instructions were all included.
    8. There was no protective film over the glass at the time of purchase, as I understand it this is a trait of genuine G-Shocks.
    9. One unique detail on the backplate is the marking 'MVMT EL"

    Watch #2- GA-110 TR Tri-color, also module 5146

    1. All the time zones, function beep, auto light, timer, alarms, stopwatch, and how to sync the digital and analog time all work as per the manual and exactly like the authentic model.
    2. Between the 8 and the 9 there are only 2 dots- and I have noticed this on several GA-110 series which I suspect to be replicas.
    3. The case screws are pointy, and shorter than the ones used in my confirmed genuine model
    4. When I set the digital time backwards, such as 09:52 back to 09:50 for example, the minute hand sweeps forward a full 12 hour cycle to sync up to the digital time
    5. The inserts for the screws on the upper 4 corners are in a hexagonal pattern
    6. The buckle is Stamped "Casio Japan" and the backplate says cased in Thailand
    7. The tin has no markings underneath, the cardboard box was bigger than watch #1 and retail tags, warranty card and instructions were all included.
    8. This one had a protective film over the glass at the time of purchase.
    9. On this backplate is the marking 'MVMT Y"

So basically 2 identical GA-110 Module 5146 watches, one is MVMT EL and the other is MVMT Y.

I suspect that watch #2, MVMT Y, is a replica/fake. Is this correct? Or is this just North America/Asia differences?

    Thank you so much!

#2 definitely sound fake. If opened up, the insides should say casio. I've seen fakes with the battery screwed down with a plastic plate over it and many other abominations. I would open a claim with ebay.

90% of fakes can bit diagnosed almost instantly by a quick visual inspection (and i dont mean via a microscope ;) ) from your friendly neighbourhood f17-er so posting some would be a great help for us to help you.

if you have it in hand, you could try the screen test, not sure what it is on a 110 but usually its pressing and holding the left 2 buttons and the bottom right, ie. all but the light button, of course this is different on each model. if you cant confirm visually then the quickest method is to do what mr wit said, pop the back off and check the internals.

I'm surprised there's a market for fake Gs. I can understand the money in faking a £4000 Rolex etc, but a £100 G-Shock? Why bother.

Because there's a huge market for G's so to fake some of the most popular models is obviously going to be a money spinner for those selling them.

Trouble is that unless you know what you're looking at, you just wouldn't know a fake from a genuine one.

If you can tell the time with it you can bet that someone will fake it.

    Definitely sounds like a fake.

Several of the same defects show up in the fake GA-100 in this video: https://youtu.be/9Oa8m6OlpNM?t=85 (cued to the point where the fake buckle says "Japan")
