    New GW-7900KG-3JF

Ok, just taken delivery of my 3rd 7900 this AM. I've been waiting for this one for a while and although it looks cool, the display is extremely hard to see in low light. I think the slight orange tint to the digits really hurts the contrast. Now, it's not exactly a fair test as my other negative display G's have a hydro mod but what you see in the below pics is true to life. The reflections and poor contrast make it very difficult to see in all but the brightest light. I think I'm going to have to hydro this just to increase the contrast. Other than that minor issue, I love it!

I'll post more pics post hydro mod!

    Hydro mod in progress....

    Strip it down:

    Naked:

Remove innards and fill with silicone shock oil (I heat it to 55c first). I have it overflowing the sides:

Carefully refit module and screw down back....careful of the gasket:

Now, this "bubble" isn't inside the module but between the 2 pieces of glass that makes up the solar panel. This works it's way out into the module over the next couple of hours and forms a tiny air bubble....enough for expansion and contraction:

Reassembled and awaiting the air to make it's way out of the solar panels:

I'll post the final pics once the screen has cleared....

Brilliant 'how to' - still not brave enough to do it though you do make it seem really easy. Then again, Lewis Hamilton makes driving an F1 car look easy - I managed to spin a go-kart!!

Hydro is easier than changing a battery. All you have to do is open the case, remove the module, fill with oil, replace module, close case. It's recomended to heat the oil and also leave a little air bubble, but I've put oil in straight from the bottle, and I've submerged the case in oil and replaced the module and sealed it up while submerged to make sure there was not an air bubble. I haven't had any Hydro'd Gs "explode" on me yet.

Aside from the fact that there are tons of models with tons of variants,
they are relative affordable that you may modify them to your liking.
From bezel/strap change, module swap, dyeing, display reverse, hydro,
to EL picture change, this is why G-Shocks are so much fun to play with.

In theory, hydro mod increases a watch's readability, temperature tolerance, and depth rating.

Most people Hydro a G because "they can." Yes, in theory, it is supposed to increase the water resistance, meaning you can take it to greater depths. I do it to make some negative displays more legible. Some models, particularly the older ones, have negative displays with digits that have poor contrast. The Hydro mod makes the digits look more "crisp" so to speak.
