    "Nice Mudmaster..."

Today, waiting in line at the post office, I noticed the watch the fellow in front of me was wearing and exclaimed, "nice Mudmaster, mate!".

He turned to me in confusion. Upon closer inspection, I realised that it was one of those horrid S****I knock-offs.

I tried to backpedal with, "Oh, yeah, it's a great...shape". He said, "Yeah, I got it off Ali Express. It's water resistant."

We spent the next 5 minutes angled slightly to each other, in awkward silence.

Similar situation with a student earlier this week. He had one of those awful analog/digital Rangeman knock-offs. At a glance, the familiar Rangeman form-factor was there, but as the words were forming I caught sight of the hands. Screeching halt...

I find it easier not to comment on people's watches. It's usually really awkward and not worth the trouble.

Haha. This sort of awkwardness is usually the preserve of the English.

Here's me picturing brash Australians and Americans.

I notice other people’s watches all the time but rarely make any comments or strike conversations, maybe once or twice. If doing that, I always try to start with a generic comment, things like “nice watch, what brand/model is that” etc. That way I don’t make false ID of the watch, or false assumptions that the guy is a watch enthusiast. If he is and responds positively, the conversation then can continue.

Has the other person ever responded as if they suspected you were planning to mug them and take the watch?

Nah if I’d mug somebody, he would never see it coming...
