    Please explain indicator on GW500A-1V

I just got a GW500A-1V and spent some time reading the manual; luckily I found a link to an online PDF version which was so much easier on the eyes than the tiny booklet!

Anyway, I have module 2688 and nowhere in the instructions is a description of the leftmost round dial on the top of the display. It seems to be merely a countdown/countup display of the minutes of the hour. Is that all it does?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Yep, that's all it does. If you go to the stopwatch, I'll bet it spins much faster .

Each little mark is 5 minute increments in time keeping and 5 seconds in STW mode.

Okay, thanks; I didn't know it did anything in Stopwatch mode. Seems a bit limited in function for such a large part of the display.

Check out the DW6900 then, it has three! A lot of G-Shocks could be accused of wasting space with pointless graphics, but also some people like them. Someone said it's like the digital equivalent of watching a mechanical movement. I don't mind them myself, depending on the watch and the overall effect.

When I had a GW-500, and was squinting at the display, I did wonder why the most useless indicator was in the largest of the circles...
I used to list my watches here until I realised it ruined people's Google searches...

But it's sooooooooo retro-80s!!! I love them, but when I get tired of them I've got other watches. The old vintages used to animate them when the alarms, countdown, or hourly chime beeped. Some would silently animate if you held the right button down. As far as I know NONE of the new ones do this, except some Baby-Gs.
    SPROING!!!!

(oops! Time for a new watch!)
