    Practically Perfect G-Shock

I just picked up a GW-5600J and I absolutely love it. It reminds me of the G-Shock that I wore when I was doing Search and Rescue for the US Coast Guard back in the mid-Eighties. I remember thinking at the time that Casio had developed a watch with a nearly perfect combination of features:
    • Tough
    • Light
    • Time and Date at a glance
    • Countdown Timer
    • Alarm
    • Stopwatch

    Now they've added:
    • Solar
    • Auto EL
    • Atomic Sync
    • World Time

I've seen that some people have been very excited about the M5600, but I'm not sure that seeing the day and date together, and the ability to sync with european atomic signals is worth roughly double what I paid for my GW-5600J. If I travelled regularly to Europe, it would be - but I don't.

Have I mentioned that I really love this watch?

Yes, the GW-5600J is a great watch. Some of the attraction to the GWM-5600 is the larger stopwatch too (1000hr). The day and date together is just a preference thing to most. And supposedly the antenna is better on the "M" due to a relocation, but for you in Chi-town, and myself near Cleveland, we should have no issues getting reception. Also, there are slight case size differences, and relocating the antenna also fixed a small issue with the top and bottom lug fitting issues (for those that install strap adapters).

All in all, if you don't need a bigger stopwatch, and don't care about day/date visible, there is no since paying 2x what you did .

    Re: Practically Perfect G-Shock

For a European punter like myself, the M5600 is as "practically perfect" as they've got to date.* This is the G I have been harping on about in this forum for YEARS. To Casio I say, thanks, I love it.

    * If I really wanted to carp, the much mourned absence of current time display in stopwatch mode is the only flaw. It's tempting to think we are having that one last must-have feature withheld to force us into future upgrades!

And you will learn to love it more as time goes by. The build quality, the feature set, as I have said before, a drunk's dream. Only thing to make it better is for me to switch out the band for a bracelet.

Though will have to get an M5600 when it comes here... I lost my original 5600 and need something that looks like it..

    jmerq,
    I have to agree!
I like my GW-5600J more than the M5600, just by looks alone. The GW-5600 is a little more on the subdued side, it doesn't have red and blue on the face and if you black out PROTECTION and G-SHOCK like Brad did you have a very stealthy G.

    Take it easy!

What can I say? It's a great excuse for us living in Europe to buy another G!

    Great feature set...

    ...shame I can't stand squares.

I'm really hoping Casio come out with an entirely new looking G with all these features than looks very stealth.
