Is it really FREE shipping if you get hit with customs bill??

Curious about the forum's opinion on this one:

If an online vendor advertises FREE SHIPPING and includes no explanatory information re: the possibility that one might get hit with a customs bill later on down the line, is this really free shipping? Additional fees are associated with shipping the package, so shipping isn't really free.

My opinion is that such information re: the possibility of customs duties should be listed up front on the web site. How about you?

I would agree with FREE SHIPPING claim. Customs has nothing to do with the sending party. Customs charges and tarrifs apply for the specific country where the product is being introduced, so the seller would not know which rates apply for each country.

I agree. The sender is packaging and shipping at no cost to the buyer. That is "free shipping." A customs tariff is not a shipping charge but an importation tax. Most carriers, such as FedEx, will pay the tariff and bill the receiving party by mail.

Yup, I hate paying customs tariffs as much as the next person but it's the price we pay to obtain some great watches from overseas.

    Hi FreeDiver,

A package ending at the customs deck and charged for tax and duties is totally out of control of the sender. You simply can't blame him/her/them. It's part of the shipping proces and it's great if it's avoided. My GW-9000 stayed three days at the customs and was delivered with an extra €30,- note. Just bad luck. And I admit, it's also not funny if it happens.

    Cheers,

    Sjors

    @ freediver,

like the other members allready mentioned has customs nothing to do with any shipping fees. customs is a bit like playing lotto. in my case, most of the time I'm lucky, only about one out of four items send from outside the EU will hit me with customs tax (umsatzeinfuhrsteuer), thats until december 31. 16% (after that 19%). and I agree with sjors, when it happens its not funny, in fact it is a major pain in the a**.

Yes that sounds like free shipping.

The official line from Australian Customs is that any mailed/couriered items from overseas with a value less than $1,000 do not attract duty, as the amount paid would not cover the cost of paperwork . I'd expect many countries would have the same liberal attitude so it is 'the luck of the draw' for the importer. Keep your fingers crossed!

In Holland so now and then we even have to overlay a proof of how much you paid for your watch(es)....only after that custums will release your package (of course with a nice bill ).......

    Cheers Bb.
