    Retro Casios (W-71/720/741/86)

    Hi guys!

While waiting for my first G to arrive (G-7800B) I started looking for a smaller watch to use in the shower. Though Casio's newer lineup has got some nice models, I became really interested in the classic/retro ones.

I first looked at the F-91W, but it only had 'Water Resist' on the face. I browsed around for testimonies and found that many people take the F-91W to the shower without a problem. But I didn't want to risk it, so I searched for 50M and 100M models.

These are the models I found:

    W-71 and W-720

    W-86 and W-741

I like the module of the W-71 and W-720 as it is the most complete (Month displayed, Dual Time, Stopwatch, 4 buttons, Reminder, etc.) but I do not like the Microlight. For me EL is a must in a digital watch.

So then I looked at the W-86 and W-741. They both look nice, even if their module is simpler. I'm inclining towards the W-741 because (I think) it has a mineral glass while the W-86 has got acrylic. (Can anyone confirm?)

I want to hear your thoughts, especially if you have owned any of these watches before. Also, do you guys know if there is a watch with a module like the W-71 and W-720, but with EL?

    Cheers,

I just found this model, DW-290. It is 100M and has EL but it does not have dual time.

Stay away from Casio's with only 3 buttons. Often the light button doubles as a stopwatch reset and the light button is in the wrong place (unless you are left handed) - bottom left button.

I'd get one of the top two, the w71 or the w720 and live with the microlight. The light button is in the "correct place" - the top right button. The bonus on these two is 24hr CDT and 24hr Stopwatch and you can see the time even when you are in the other modes.

    The dw290 is a classic.

Why not get the dw5600 G-shock? Not as slim and light as the top four, but definitely wears smaller than the dw290 I think. And it comes in a variety of colours and camoflague designs. You are sure to find one you like.

A strange and wonderful thing, the DW-290.

I used to list my watches here until I realised it ruined people's Google searches...

I owned the W-86 for a while and liked the EL, but found the display sometimes a bit hard to read, compared to the F-91W which has a much sharper display. The W-720 has a sharp display too and its 100m water resist and dual time are a great plus compared to the F-91W.

The F-91W doesn't have EL, nor does the W-720, but I don't miss it. The LED does give enough light for me when it's dark, but I can think that when my eyes get weaker, I need a watch with better illumination.

Both are really nice watches and especially the W-720 offers a lot of functions for a small price. I could do most daily life and outdoor activities with that watch, but Casio made so many nice and affordable watches, it is just fun to buy and use them.

I don't own the W-86 anymore, but still have the F-91W and bought the W-720 recently.

Actually, the DW290 is 200M. The module has the same functions as the DW5600E. If your in the US a new DW290 can be found on eBay for under $20.

How many of you really change watch just for shower?

I would suggest for a smaller watch DW5600E. Best module too, at least from my point of view. Have been using it in sauna and pool. This week going to dip it into hot spring, as currently in Iceland.
