Question Seeking advice on a new G-shock as an Xmas present

I am looking for a G-Shock watch as an Xmas present.
The recipient of this G-shock is mid fifty and of medium built 5'6" tall.
He is an engineer and works in the office most of the time.

    Requirements are:
    1. Analog hands are a must
    2. Analog and digital are also ok
    3. Diameter around 47mm i.e. not a big watch
    4. Preferably black resin
    5. Stylish for office work in casual dress
    6. Under $150

    Please feel free to advise.
    Thanks!

Re: Seeking advice on a new G-shock as an Xmas present

I have some of the same parameters for my sons right now...one of the problems with the 47mm criteria for the ones readily available on the market right now is that you limit yourself a lot... a higher % of the analog / digital ones are bigger than that.

    • To meet your 47mm criteria, try these: GW1500-1 ($150); GW2500-1 ($250); G100-1b($99);

    • Close to your criteria (one dimension around 47mm but other around 51mm): AWGM100-1a($150); G300-3a($99); AWGM100B-1a (reverse display - $150)

    • If you want to go in the 55mm range by 51ish, the world is your oyster, you have the GAC100's, GA110's, GA150's, GA200's....

I have this at my fingertips as I have twin sons, and one is 6ft tall, the other 5'2", one likes big GShocks, one likes smaller ones...

    Cheers, hope this helps.

Very much appreciate your quick reply.
These are good starting points for shopping.

Two questions - How is the reverse display? Is it difficult to read under low light condition?

Reverse display... LOL, make your own call:

This is just one of MANY posts on the reverse display preference topic. Search the archive here.

Bottom line: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY when it comes to reverse displays - they are not for everyone, that is a proven point. Also, check watch reviews on Amazon, it will reinforce the reverse display 50 / 50 split... you may end up liking them!

EDIT: Just so you know, some people get emotional around here for some reason when you say that reverse displays are hard to read.... try before you buy.

I know this isn't a positive vs negative display thread but if I were buying for a gift I'd stick with the positive display, the subdials are small and positive display does make them easier to read. As previously mentioned I would recommend one of these, not too big and could be worn for almost any occasion.

Also, it kind of depends if they want the "other" features. Especially on an analog watch. I like the all black GA-150 BECAUSE the neg display effectively hides those windows. Making it a very tough simple analog watch. Just a thought and a different way to look at it.
Yes, I am OCD. What gave it away?

    Spot this G-Shock:
    AW-591MS-1ADR AW591MS Casio G-shock World Time

It is on sale $88, comes with a fabric (not resin) band and seems to be quite stylish for office use.

Anyone has bought this or a similar one?
What is your opinion of AW591 or AW590 ?

Released in '07... would ask a few questions about if it is new stock, where it came from, etc...

And I am starting to see price is your driver... IMHO there are many out there closer to your $150 that are new stock that look better and are better overall choices...

But YMMV and different choices are what makes the world go round!!

    Good luck.

GW-2500B maybe? Don't know if you can get it for 150 bucks however.

    Cheers, Sedi

Thank you all for your advices.

I have pulled the trigger to buy a more recent watch. It is the AWGM100-1A Men's G Shock Multiband Atomic Time Keeping Alarm Watch. The sale price ($81.99) is quite appealing too!

Now waiting eagerly for the watch to arrive.
