Hello guys. Somehow I just couldn't stop browsing for G shocks this morning.
Funny how I came into this. I just flew a red eye from Tokyo and this morning I just thought...you know what? I think I want a G-shock.
It's a pity how I went through various watch stores and not even try a single G. I went to the luxury boutiques looking for a particular Automatic, but even when I got a great deal, the watch didn't "speak" to me that well. Then I went on to find a particular German tool watch with UTC function but none of the 3-4 stores I went to had it.
Coming back home empty handed I had a chat with my fellow WIS friend and he told me a G-shock would serve as a perfect beater.
It all made sense. My automatic collection is pretty solid: a do-everything Submariner, a fun Seiko SKX007 that I like to change up with different straps, and a Panerai. I was looking for something to fill the space between the Seiko and the Rolex with a Sinn UTC, but that is so hard to find without special orders where I live.
A little about myself:
Physically my wrist is only about 6.4".The 40mm Sub and 42mm Seiko fit me quite well, but the 44mm PAM is a little oversized. I'd like to say 40mm is probably my sweet spot.
Work: Office work with a lot of travel (up to 50+ flights a year). Domestically I visit supply depots, shops, and factories. Very casual, a typical work uniform is a company polo shirt and slacks/jeans. Weather in Indonesia is hot and humid that 80% of my wardrobe is short sleeved. A typical dress-up customer visit is short sleeve button down with slacks.
I also go abroad a few times a year for leisure and work (sometimes both in one shot). That means a lot of time zones.
Not overly big considering my wrist size. A lot of short sleeve wear also means I don't want something that attracts too much attention to my wrist.
Don't need any GPS/radio sync since it's not available (I don't think the models make it here anyway)
Hopefully both the hands and digital windows are easily readable. I saw a live video of an analog in stopwatch mode which is uber cool but I'd guess it would be troublesome to keep changing modes as there is only one way to show information that is the 2 hands. So I guess a digital window would help do more stuff at once (like display 2nd time zone while away from home). This is why I'm thinking I want an ana-digi.
I think I'm gonna spend ~$200 for this watch.
What I've looked at so far:
I like the AWGs, but the 60 minute countdown and stopwatch (CMIIW) concerns me a little. I like to use the countdown when I fly long hauls. But the design is very clean and elegant.
I've browsed the GA 1xx, 2xx. They look nice but from the pictures it can be hard to read the skeleton-style hands.
Also I've considered the DW 6900 classics if the anadigis don't pan out.
Lastly, I will be visiting the local G shock store this weekend. I hope I can come in more informed. Note that I have not tried a single G, so it's gonna be an exciting/nervous weekend.
