I’ve seen these on some Casios and Timexes, including old Timex Ironmans. I don’t own one, but I’m hoping you’ll get a sense of what I mean from this picture:

They seem to have impressive contrast in many kinds of lighting.

Is there a name for this type of LCD? Are the G-Shocks that use it?

Holographic diffraction membranes? The Casio W-94H had one.

I had one. Well, I still have it, but screwed up a mod attempt. Very small watch, with the best progress beeper on a countdown timer, and nice and loud too. But it is so small.

If I hadn't screwed it up, the brightness of the mod would have been one of the highest, almost as high as the W-71.

Re: Is there a name for these shiny green LCD panels?

    Two minor updates:

    1) very pleased to see that the W-94H is widely available for $20. I may have to grab one of these, it would fit my skinny wrists really nicely.

    2) I happened to notice in the first few seconds of this video from Gshock Highfasion, it looks like the Frogman Magma Ocean has some of the magic holographic panel tech. Could just be a trick of the video lighting, but that would be neat! There's definitely a greenish/yellowish tint, and it would make sense to put a premium panel in a premium frogman. The "vanilla" GWF1000-1 has a plain silver/gray panel.

    Edit -- one more:

I found a decent write-up on the tech. I barely skimmed it so far, but it's definitely what I'm looking for: http://robertsprojects.blogspot.com/...reflector.html

    Thanks for the help!

Make sure you get the one with the nylon fabric strap. It's very high quality, very well made, and super comfortable. Make sure you are not buying the W93, which has the same case, same module, but a resin strap, and worst of all, it does NOT have the holo-display.

Frankly, the W-94H at that price is worth it just for the strap.

edit: Thanks for the link! I had been vaguely aware of the tech, but this is very useful. Might want to make some future mods...

I googled around hoping to find a source for this material, and I didn’t have any luck. Definitely agree, it looks like some awesome mods would be possible.

I don’t know if this is the same green the OP is referring to but I like this green on my 5610. My ProTrek 2500 has the same. My girlfriends Baby G has the same. It’s definitely pleasing to the eye though I find the light lavender on my Rangeman 9400 to be easier to read.

Interesting topic! The linked blog post with the description of the holographic technology was really nice.

Hmm, I think this is this just the light function of the watch, or have you modded these? :) The holographic display element thingy is passive and just looks like it's glowing (as it directionally reflects the ambient light hitting it, focusing it to a relatively narrow area, instead of scattering it in all directions).
