Want a King but in doubt about the display... Negative/Positive...?

After seeing six hundred über cool pictures on this forum of GX56's I also gotta have one, so thanks for that!

However, at the moment I have 4 7900's which I love, all with a positive display. The GX56 I am interested in most is the one with the red buttons but it has a negative display. Will this be an "issue", something to get used to or rather a mistake? The camps are very much divided I believe.

The one in second place at the moment is a GX56 with a positive display but has black buttons which I find a lot less cool.

What to do, what to do... It will be my first negative display G-Shock. These are the models I'm torn between right now:

I am wearing my GW7900b right now - negative display. The last 3 times I've checked for the time, I couldn't see it! Had to use the light. Make no mistake, it's a crackingly great looking watch, but an absolute triumph of style over substance. If you want your watch to enable you to tell the time easily, get a 'positive'. If you want stylish, the negative is fine but you'll be using the light al the time - you know, like those quaint LED watches of the 70's...
Never argue with an idiot - they'll only bring you down to their level and win from experience...

GW7900B (Stealth modded), GW7900CD-9ER (slightly modded), G7900A-7ER (Camo modded) G7900MS-1BDR, GW2500BD, ProTrek PRG 60YT (RIP), Chase Durer Mach 3, 2 x Citizen Skyhawks (Black & Titanium), Citizen Carbon Promaster JY0075-54E, 2 x vintage Seiko Chronographs, Invicat Grand Diver, Citizen BL5280-52E. Casio GWA 1100-1AER, GWG 1000-1A3ER (J&K metal bracelet conversion). GA400...

In general, the pictures always show the negative display to contrast much better than it actually does it real life usage.
However, I think the red/ black king with negative display looks alot better than the other watch. I have the same red watch and it's one of my favorites. I do not have much difficulty reading the time, TBH. The picture below might help. Contrast is very acceptable IMO.

Can't go wrong either way. Personally, I prefer negative display watches over the positive ones. My eyes are still good so I have no problem reading them. Plus, they just look cool! However, the gold display on the GX56 is pretty nice. That will be in my collection sooner than later. Here's a pic that shows the contrast of the -1B in regular indoor lighting conditons. I threw in the 7900 for good measure!

    Hi,
the King actually has one of the better negative displays - not in the same league as a G-7800B or G-7710-1 but better than most. I bought my orange King as a summer watch so legibility isn't that much of an issue - here are a few pics to maybe help in your decision:

I didn't have to use the backlight that much so far. It also depends on the question if you're gonna use the features often - in that case the bigger problem are the stiff buttons not the negative display IMHO .

I'd say the biggest problem with the King is the lack of features. For me, this watch is solely for looks as it probably has the worst module of any G I own.

In this case I'd go positive because I think its the better looking watch. I think the yellow display is so fresh and unique, that's why I bought that one. It may be positive but it's a different kinda positive. I actually bought the gold king first but I didn't think it looked that great plus the difficulty reading the screen sealed it's return. I prefer negative displays usually because I like the style, but I've learned to choose by individual model, not just because it's positive or negative. Good luck!

What functions do you use on a regular basis that a King doesn't have.. compass, tide graph, moon, etc? Just wondering, because the only functions I ever use that a King doesn't have is the G9300's compass and moon graph..

Re: Want a King but in doubt about the display... Negative/Positive...?

Wow, thanks a lot for all the replies! Must say... It hasn't made it any easier though...

On some pictures I find the negative display to be "good enough" while on others it's more "hmmm, why isn't it more readable". Still like the black/red one the most and it's very affordable now at Amazon UK but afraid it's gonna be the other one.

The lack of features is indeed still also a deciding factor. Not to choose between the negative or positive of course but the whole watch in itself. It's a very big watch with very little functions. Sure, how often does one really use those additional things but still, lotsa stuff is simply cool. Never use the moon/tide stuff on the 7900's but still like it. The GX56 in that respect is rather under equipped.

Oh well. More food for thought, again, thanks all!
