    Watch for Coast Guard?

Friend's graduating from basic in a couple weeks. He expressed his interest in getting a G before he went, but wanted to wait until after boot camp so he wasn't abusing it too much. I suggested to him something solar, atomic, and tide graph. He seemed to agree with those features. Relatively small wrists. So, what do you guys suggest? Is a G right for the job? Was also thinking about a basic tracer analog watch.

Edit: Orange and black colors would be a plus

G Shock. Tide graph is unnecessary, trust me.

    Budget?

Im in the Coast Guard. I got a dark blue one that goes perfectly with ODUs. Its solar, not atomic. Its pretty sharp though. The also have the blacked out military g's out there and thats a pretty good option.

Get him the watch I just bought. G Shock GA100MC on red, white and blue nylon strap (hence no resin rot on strap). About $78.00 plus shipping.
Has all the bells, lights, and horns he will need in the USCG. I have 7 Gs and this is my fave watch. Has a 28 mm strap too. loss or gain of approx
2 secs a month. Not Tough Solar nor Atomic Time (I can buy batteries @ $10.00 and set watches BTW)

I'd recommend the GW-9110 Gulfman (the positive display). Its all-titanium parts are perfect for the water and it does have the tide indicator. Another option is the GW-7900 which has basically the same module plus a front-mounted light button for ease of reach, but no titanium. The G-7900 also has a tide indictor and comes in a nice orange color for less money (because there is no solar/atomic functionality, but the module is still great).

Thanks for all the feedback. Consensus seems to be that tide graph is not necessary? Budget is ~200.

If he doesn't need any special functions, then you can just show him amazon.com and search for g-shock and pick the model he likes best.

Pretty much all of them will be fine with shock resistance and 200m WR. The G-7900-4 is known as Rescue red, so maybe that would be interesting model for him.

I would probably go for 5600 or 7900 series.

    IMO,

If he will be on ship working then my suggestion (with a grain of salt.....water) would be a DW5600E or a DW6900. Solar is nice, as is atomic. But those two models have been around for a long time for a reason. They work and are extremely reliable. I would not go for something expensive to work on board a ship.

Casio tide graphs are worthless, especially on the west coast, and are a novelty/gimmick at best.
