What did I do to my Gulfmaster?

Okay, I'm kinda freaking out here.

I wanted my first post about my Gulfmaster (used, but new to me) to be how awesome it is. But with any of the used GShocks that I buy, I wanted to clean it to get rid of any previous smells, oils, grime, etc of the previous owner.

I disassembled it, and used a mild dishwashing soap and lukewarm water and a soft bristled toothbrush to clean it.

After cleaning the straps and such, I was going to put it back together when I noticed the display being washed out. It still responds to button presses. It is just the display that is showing as it is.

Did I kill it? Is it in the process of a slow death? I didn't press any buttons that I am aware of while I was cleaning it.

Waiting in anxiousness....really pissed at myself right now.

Did you open the case up as well? If I had to hazard a guess, I think moisture entered the module. Consider re-opening it and letting the watch air dry. Perhaps use a fan to speed up the process.

Thanks Otto. No, I didn’t open the case. I put it in a bag of rice to try and dry it out if this indeed due to moisture. Wish I would have treated this thing like a regular watch, I’m just not used to having to be so careful with GShocks.

If it can actually dry out, it should return to normal?

You might try removing the case back to see if the gasket is intact. Also, it will dry faster with the case back removed.

Good suggestion; I went ahead and did that. I also used an air blower I use for photography (has a built in filter so that there isn’t debris being blown out) before opening the case and then after for a little bit to start the drying process.

And yes, that gasket was not in place. . Hopefully drying out will fix it.

Was the gasket completely missing, or just not in the right place? I wonder why someone opened up a solar watch in the first place. Does it have the proper rechargeable battery (a CTLxxxx, not a CRxxxx)?

It was there, just not in place. My thought exactly regarding why somebody would have opened it. I’ve noticed the misinformed will take out the battery of a solar watch when it appears dead, replace it with a CR. Will look at that after I’m done with bedtimes.

Re: What did I do to my Gulfmaster?

Just took a quick look. Without opening the battery cage, just lifting the sticker, I’m pretty sure I saw an L. Took a look at the display and it is back to regular contrast already! Going to spend some more time later air blowing it though.
