Chiefly, that the DW is a basic watch, but has a full set of timekeeping functions, whereas the GW has solar power and atomic timekeeping (if you're in the right part of the world to receive it - Japan and USA), but a more limited set of timekeeping functions.

For me, the balance of functions and features means I would rate the 5600 variants like this: 1) DW-5600, 2) G-5600 (solar, but not atomic), 3) GW-5600.

It all depends on how much priority you give to solar power and atomic timekeeping.

I used to list my watches here until I realised it ruined people's Google searches...

The solar thing I can take it or leave it !! But I really like the atomic time keeping thing your watch is always dead on !! I don't mind replacing a battery now and then !!!!B-)

One big plus for me on the GW-5600, is that it has 5 daily alarms; where the DW-5600 has one single alarm. I use 3 different alarms per day.

If I had to rate the current production 5600s, it would be:

    1. G-5600
    2. GW-5600
    3. DW-5600

Good point - I hadn't considered that. Wouldn't change my 1,2,3, but I may have to revise my definition of a perfect G!

The alarm thing is pretty big to me. I usually set a snooze alarm to help wake me up in the morning for work. I also set an alarm as a reminder to take my medication, and another to remind me to catch the bus home from work. This need definitely puts some G-Shocks in my "work watch" category, and others into my "weekend watch" category.

While My Honorable fellow forumers have given an already

vast contibution of knowledge. I will include this tid bit

The DW-5600E which is the current direct desendant of the 1983-84 DW-5000, 1984-1987(some say was produced till end of decade) DW-5200 and the 1987-95 DW-5600C and if discontinued soon will be the last to meet the original's specs(resin case and 16mm strap not with standing) as the G5600 GW-5600 and DW-56RT all look the same BUT to allow the bigger display module the 3 latter watches are about 2 mm's longer(the DW-5600E bezel will not fit.

all are good but none are "better" then the other so to speak as they all have pro's and con's

DW-5600E has only a 2 year rated battery if you use the EL light all the time(If you don't then the battery lasts forever) and has no world or dual times
G-5600 has been plagued by the failing of it's CTL-1616 storage battery.

GW-5600 may or may not have to suffer from the same bad CTL1616 as it is too new to know BUT the strap is not the same as the DW and G 5600's so that when the strap is worn out you have to hope to heck Casio still gots them. Unlike with the G5600 becuse the DW-5600E is I think Casio's best seller so you can always find that strap.

DW-56RT has the same band problem but looks like the strap for the DW-56RT and GW5600J are the same except the GW has a little G on the buckle.

    Price ranges for them

    DW-5600E- $35-$45
    DW-56RT-$50-$60
GW-5600- $60-$100 (USA prices in JC Penny stores when on sale and when not)
    G-5600- $70-$120

    Hope this helps
    Leon

Re: What is the different between DW5600 and GW5600?

I was under the impression that the G-5600 used the same resin case and bezel as the DW-5600E. Am I wrong?

    Yes it is different.....

It takes putting a dw-5600E bezel up against the bezel from the g5600 to find out as they look the same from a far, but are in fact two different things.

    Cheers

Re: What is the different between DW5600 and GW5600?

The differences that catch my eye, which i am not quite fond of.. is the G5600 will display time in countdown timer mode.. The GW5600 does not.. and the G5600 will display the day and date without selection in timekeeping mode.. the GW5600 you must depress top right button to switch between day, and date.
Beyond that... i love both of these watches!!
